Hey guys, as the the concept is almost finished, I'd like to ask what kind of direction do you think it's more appropriate to 3D look. I was thinking in an approach similar of the great Hai Kai - diffuse only, with strong and artistic strokes.
But in other hand, I believe I could achieve more richness, specially on caricatures, with a next gen approach. Any thoughts?
I'd say do whatever style you think will look the best, you have very strong painting skills so why not, the only constraint this is giving you is if you wanna have different lightings for your shot, I don't think that is necerassy.
Thank you for the comments, guys! I think an approach like SF4 could be very good too. I'll make some experiments.
As I kind of suck in 3d, I believe ups will be a bit slower from now on... But when I have something decent to show, I'll post here. Thanks for visiting!
Thanks for the encouragement, fellows. Diffuse only sounds goods, but I'd probably do a test with normals. After Viktorsan suggestion, I think I could get good results with an style a la SF4. Let's see what heppens.
And there goes my first update on 3d. I tried to do the base mesh on Maya with orto drawings, but it sucked. Then I tried to do in Zbrush. Man, Zbrush is a god send to Earth. It's the most super-ultra-mega-powerful-intuitive-fucking-artistic-lick-my-balls-3D tool ever. I liked the initial results very much.
There are a lot of lumps on the mesh, because I'm doing this like a sketch. I'll get rid of them later, with retopo, I hope. As 3d is not my speciality, crits and comments, or suggestions, are very welcome!
i think currently he is in a middle-ground between stylised and realistic and it is lacking some of its charm. IMO I would look into the Mpolish and Hpolish brushes and some light(intensity) smoothing to really bring back some of the stylization of the concept.
The guy's cool, but I would stay with a clean smooth and non detailed look. Try to get a bit more in touch with your initial concept and smooth out them forms.
Hanging flab is good ofcourse, but you're starting to overdo it in the back and near the arms.
That is, if you want to capture the cartoony look of your concept.
o.O Holy cow! Bobo likes this work! Now I can die! :poly142::poly142::poly142:
Hehe, thank you man. Your words really mean a lot to me. You're one of my favorite artists.
Maph: Thank you for your input, man. After reading your post, I kind of gave up of normal mapping... I smoothed the details, and I'll try to retopo this guy maintening the volume, and let the diffuse do the trick.
Calabi: I worked on it a bit more. Thanks!
So there goes the completed guy. I added wings, teeth, tongue and the most important, his dick! Rounded the head and made some minor changes. Next step will be retopo him. If necessary, I'll do more sculpting later. Crits and comments, please.
Hey guys. I'm not dead. Just totally out of my confort zone. Sometimes is hard to figure out how to do some things, so the process is becoming a bit slow. Anyway, i don't want to give up.
I sculpted Bruce's head, retopoed and mapped. Added my original painting, mirrored and made some minor corrections. I know it's terrible by now, needs a lot of fixes and it's far from completed, but I wanted to post something new here. Crits and comments would be good
Ravenslayer: Thank you. I'll adjust this when I come back to him.
JacqueChoi: Thank you man. The only problem is that I'm just a regular human being, and not Josh Singh. This guy is sick. But I think I can do a normal map test, when model and mapping be done.
Terrabite: Thank you!
Not much progress, but I blocked the heads of Segal and mr. Norris.
are you going for the fat steven seagal or the younger one btw?
if you're going for he younger version maybe you could flatten some of the planes and pinching the eyes some more would maybe make the caricature even stronger (pretty badass job already imo)
Ravenslayer: Thank you, man! I'm going to younger Segal. My intention is to narrow his face a bit more. On the first blockout, I just want to see if I could capture his similarity with the drawing.
Stertman and Ethotheric: Thanks, guys!
So, finally I finished retopo on the main char. I'm gonna add extra parts (teeth, heads, tongue, etc) and make optimizations, if necessary...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA What an awesome entry! I really love your style and the concept is kick ass. Great workings. I am really looking forward to seeing some more please.
haha totally awesome and man the fidelity to the concept is good.
Careful about texel resolution though, the heads looks much sharper, its fine if it is intentionnal just though I'd point it out.
Thank you, Wizo. What do you mean with texel resolution? The fact that the resolution of caricatures is a bit larger than the main figure? It's intentional, I gave caricatures a bit more of space on UVs layout, so I prevent the loss of details. They are an important thing on this char.
No more comments, crits? No more love from anyone?
hey dude, looks like your bake came out pretty nice. your caricatures translated well in the low poly. I have just one comment..
where fernandez's breasts wrap around the side to his back, there isn't enough silhouette breaking shapes, i would pull some of the verts outwards to define the shape of his fat rolls. right now it looks a little flat.
know what i mean? let me know if i'm not being clear.
Loving this entry. Such a great interpretation of what is basically 5 spheres. Also I dont wear jewelry but if you manufactured that necklace I would be first in line.
He is looking great. The heads read as who they are, and love there expressions. Would love to see some blood dripping from the base of the heads. Maybe some African tribal tattoos on the body for more visual interest? He's got a witchdoctor feel to him.

I hear what you are saying about the other waku characters being unknown...

Looking ace!

Anyway nice work and good luck on the 3D !

PS: No teeth yet
also, i think your low poly mesh has captured the spirit of your caricatures successfully in 3d.
I hope on next PC challenge admins include a 2d category...
I think this could definitely work amazingly well with Normal/Spec/Diffuse if you render it like Josh Singh would.
JacqueChoi: Thank you man. The only problem is that I'm just a regular human being, and not Josh Singh. This guy is sick. But I think I can do a normal map test, when model and mapping be done.

No problems about Bruce, but I'm getting this error message constantly:
@mcunha98: Thank you man!

The model is mapped... I just have to make the final UVs layout now.
Zbrush viewport:
Maya viewport (using the great BRDF shader for Maya by Brice Vandemoortele and Cedric Caillaud)
And here's a comparison between normal mapped model and full color. Any opinions, which one is more adequated? Personally, I prefer the normal mapped.
Only (unfinished) normals:
One more up. Some work on Bruce and a view of the whole thing. Textures are not done yet.
Careful about texel resolution though, the heads looks much sharper, its fine if it is intentionnal just though I'd point it out.
Inspiring work!

Subscribed! G'luck!
There goes some more work on texture and normal. I'm almost done with them.

oh, i see you just fixed it already.
Fantastic work.
