I really wanted to recreate a character that I loved and despised. Plus, this seems like it'll be a lot of fun to dissect. Not sure what direction I'll go with, but it'll reveal itself soon enough.
its cool man! one of us is doing military scrapper armor look. he said metal gear solid ish. im doing steampunk western yoshi. theres plenty of other interpretations of this character. medieval? demon? hes a pretty versatile character. has had many different looks in the past. maybe a death like yoshi? grimreaper? just some ideas if you are sticking with it
I was thinking more sci-fi and android like. More machine than human; like the wooden puppet interpretation. Except, you know, metal and stuff lol. I don't know if that crosses over the "metal gear", but I'll show progress once I'm done conceptualizing
Lookin cool. I played Tekken back when Yoshimitsu was just a jumble of dark textures so I don't know his original design well, lol. It might be cool if the flag thing on his back was high tech, like hologram screens instead of cloth.
Yeah, definitely go with the holograms on the flag.
Not really feeling the lurv on those beads on his left arm though, and his sharp pointy stick needs to be longer (and needs glowy bits).
Great redesign, agree with the others though the beads are kind of distracting and holographic flags would look far more futuristic. I really like the head/mask design though!
haha, yeah i haven't really touched that area yet. This was just a first pass to see what I could bring to the table. i'm just trying to focux on silhouette detail at the moment. I'll start blocking in the major details later.
That's an awesome start for your design! The face in particular looks quite delicious. Yoshimitsu is an awesome character in so many ways, definately my fav. out of fight game characters. I'm doing some concepts of him aswell now even though I can't participate in the comp with 2D. So I've done some research on yoshimitsu and like you've included, his arm is robotic, however I'm quite certain it's his left arm that is robotic and he also holds his sword with his left. Just in case you missed that, of course it's up to you if you want to change things up.
FrozZT - It's weird, every picture I see of him in SC he holds it with his right hand, but every Tekken version he's a lefty. I also thought it was his right that was wooden, but I could be wrong.

Did some wiki-ing, apparently the Yoshimitsu in Tekken and Soul Calibur are not intended to be the same character. Descendant or something. He's left-handed in Tekken, and right-handed in SC. So I guess either way it's not wrong, lol. As for Tekken, his left arm seems to be the wooden one. In SC it's definitely his right arm. So I guess as long as he's holding his sword with his wooden arm, you're doing it right.
sweet dood. i feel like the robotic arm is a little too slender compared to the other. makes him feel off balance. maybe reduce the size of his bracer or make the shoulders non-symmetrical with the non robot side being smaller? personally i liked the way you had it before with the prayer beads, it had a nice sort of symbolism especially if you went with a more malicious oni style face (which i think you should do =P). also push the silhouette of the top of the head a bit. he's got a lot going on everywhere else (including his head and face) it might be nice to have something simple go a bit further in breaking the curve of his head.
haha yoshimitsu is so incredibly difficult to suggest things for since he's gone through so many drastic redesigns. I do think if you're going in the samurai direction, some sort of ornamental design that makes his head more top-heavy would work well. You could play off of the designs you have coming out of his shoulders, for instance.
I think he’s looking pretty good so far, loving the face in his chest armour, always a nice way to add creepiness to something

Amazing, I agree with @Endr though, he needs some leg stuff/armor to go with all the cool detail you did for the top (you just might have not given that a pass yet). Maybe make one of those robotic also?
As far as the legs go I'm pushing for cybernetic joints and sort of mechanical tabi for the feet. I haven't touched it yet really. I'm trying to get the upper body silhouette settled before i move on to the feet. Don't worry, it will be spectacular.
I can't rmember wether it was tekken or when he showed up in souledge(I think!), he had an awsome mechanical wooden arm that actually animated - Brilliant char though. good luck
Alright, another update. Deciding to forgo my school work (not that i'm any good at unreal script anyway) and working on this more.
Most of the upper body is finalized. Wanted to go with a sleeker feeling instead of the last one; it felt too clunky. Lower body, abdomen, flag, and arms are still WIP. hoping to get this finished soon so I can start modeling.
Did a rough blockout in max tonight. Just an hour or two's work (most of it spend on the mask haha). Trying to adjust proportion in 3d space instead of eyeing everything up from my concept. I'll probably be switching back and forth between 2d and 3d until I've got my final design down. Anyway, here's what I have so far.
SOOOOOO cool Max. Just out of curiosity, since I drool over texture-work (yours especially,) are you going for clean and new looking metal work, or will it be battle-worn & scorched from his crazy badass space-tech warfare?
I want to do a moderate number of metal scratches. Keep it clean but still provide enough detail. I'm also going to paint the metal with some cool japanese inscription stuff. Not sure what yet, but it's gonna be awesome.
