I don't really feel like we're out. I think a main reason for it is that polycount is a (primarily) 3D community, with infinitely more 3D artists than 2D artists. You'd have like, 15 pages of 3D art contest entries, and maybe one of 2D entries. Kinda hard to have a "brawl" or significant tournament without significant entries, and we certainly shouldn't be thrown into the same batch as 3D work. It makes sense why there's no 2D category this time around. That's not even considering the (somewhat) impromptu nature of this contest's happening.
Besides, Polycount in all reality is a pretty small little forum community. What's going to get you exposure is your work and the quality of it, whether it's in the contest or not. Even within the contest - which entries do you think are going to get the most exposure? The ones that show hard work, promise, and of course - quality. But putting up something that's awesome as hell in the Pimping and Previews section is going to be just as worthwhile - the only difference is it won't be getting voted on. No big deal.
I really feel like I as a 2D artist could start a new thread in P&P where I pursue some paintings of newly envisioned fighting characters, and still REALLY feel like I was getting in on the vibe of the contest. Sure it would not get voted on, but it'd still be fun and help push me in a direction I might not've otherwise ventured towards.
Anyway - the entries so far are looking awesome. Seeing some cool choices along with several characters I've never heard of. Good luck to all!
c'mooon! pick something small and modular that won't be an epic slog! find a scene and simplify it down the the basic blocks! The contest is only as big as you make it!
I'd do this before DW5 if there was a 2D section. If the admins aren't up for it, is anyone interested in putting it together? Is it for instance ok to get a thread in the compo section and participate on an unofficial level?
Basically I just badly want to participate any way possible doing a 2d character(I don't need to actually compete). If it's just to try and inspire the competitors in the 3D category that's great. Can I has thread? ♥

I'm up for an unofficial comp. Maybe something like:
-1 illustration of the character doing a move (either from the game or imagined)
-front and back perspective shots, or ortho sheet.
It's an unnoficial 2d challenge for us, 2d guys. So, if you want to post your concepts there, feel free. It's unnoficial, but it will be as fun as the official challenge.
Yeah, I asked Geezus to delete it to me. On this other thread - http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82215 - guys clarify me that the forum is much more 3d oriented. And anyway, I've realized that there was no interest on the thread I created. Nobody posted there. So let's go 3d.
I found a secret Polycount cock!...Do I win something?
:high five:? :poly124:
Awesome contest! It's nice to see support for environments, a good change of pace from comps like DW. I was hoping to see some love for the 2D guys as well. :poly122: But at least I can try and shoehorn one of my concept art buddies to tag team an environment.

Damn, thanks Emil. I was on the same page as Prophecies until you posted that link.
Very well put, Two Listen. So, let's go to work.
i'll be sad if someone doesn't make this level
and 90% characters, i would have thought there were more enviromental guys
Ive found 1 or 2 but not all the stages...wanted to compare them and get some ideas
that stage would look awesome in CryEngine 2/3
