Attachments or Image hosting for Polycount

Hello Polycounters.

What is the best way to post images to get help with in the forums?

I see some people do not like attachments. However It seems I "May not post Attachments"

I need help with something and must post pic's to illustrate!

Can anyone suggest a good free hosting site?

This could be considered a technical question I guess.

You're correct that mostly people don't like attachments. There are plenty of free hosting sites though so that shouldn't be a problem. Dropbox, Photobucket and Imageshack are three popular ones.

Dropbox all the way. Simply drop files in your public folder. If you overwrite an image you've posted on many forums, it will be be updated everywhere + history. Also good for keeping an easy access to your files between pc's (like game saves for instance)

Buy your own hosting+domain, then you can later put a shiny portfolio on it! Orrrr just use it to share files.

Throwing my hat in for Dropbox as well. It gives you more than enough space on the free account (you can also harass friends, family, and strangers to join up for more), and it has about the simplest interface imaginable.

I personally don't like attachments just because the way my browser handles them. It opens them in the same window and when I click back any post I was working on is gone. It's killed more than a few critiques I've been working on. It's a pain to right click and choose "open in new tab" bahh... if it eats my post I don't start over, that persons loss for not using one of the most simple and most useful programs around.

+1 to dropbox. So simple, flexible and versatile. I save out my 3dsmax UI to dropbox so I have it where ever I go, same with scripts. It couldn't be easier for hosting images, drag or save the file to the public folder, right click, copy public link, paste and you're done.

Though I have made some posts around the web with dropbox images, it is really bad practice to use it in public formats like a forum.

When you run out of space, and delete stuff to make more room, you create a bunch of trash topics because the images they talk about no longer exist.

It's not bad at all. If ever I don't use that, I use ImageShack. I used to use ImageHost.Org, but they have a captcha now, and I can't be bothered for an uploaded image.

I realize these are likely not permanent either, however, they have more of a chance of lasting than DB images.

imgur is great for the purpose of sharing images alone.
But dropbox has many other uses, sharing any kind of file, backing up stuff, syncing devices which gives access to your notes/scripts/passwords/portable apps and their settings, collaborative group-syncing, hosting html based websites and a bunch of other stuff

I was recommended the image hosting place that is connected through Google, and their Gmail accounts. Its free..and I was told can store your high res images with no problem. I don't know the data limit though since I haven't started to utilize it yet.

Dropbox is cool, but blocked in China (that's why I'm not so much a fan of it any more hehe)
Photobucket - not as cool as it used to be, but still very nice and allows direct hotlinking
Imageshack - imho just terrible. stuff wouldn't load even in the "free world", hotlinking often wouldn't take you to the picture but to another page with the picture and ads... did I mention it always seems to be terribly slow?

I've also seen people using Flickr - even though it's intended for photos, they do allow rendered images and allow direct hotlinks.
