Cool, whats with the big cylinder sticking out the back of the buttstock? Looks like it would be uncomfortable.
That button unlatches the stock when it's folded and locked in place by the latch-hook on the left side of the receiver up by the rear sight. It's gently spring loaded, so it gets pushed into the stock whenever you shoulder the rifle and you don't even feel it.
bbob: dude definitely went the extra mile, but it actually does make sense for modeling an AK. Most of the interals are pretty well visible from the ejection port, there's not too much work to get the rest of it.
But that underplays the fact that the got the piston recoil spring sagging just so. Bravo
I wanted to chime back in and say how impressed I am looking at this now by the fidelity of the bakelite mag. I modeled one of those and I thought I was getting a little excessive with detail, but you actually managed to capture the material and all the quirky little byproducts and subtle depressions from the manufacturing process.
And the new model keeps up the consistency of quality, well done.
Also makes me want to try and model a gun when I get a chance... any suggestions on what may be a good one to start off with? Sorry to ninja in on your thread
Were is tight? If it was tight it would not have any headroom to move.
Its only tight when the lock goes back and compresses the spring.
Nope, he's got it right for the AK-100 series rifles, I've got the bolt carrier spring from my Izmash Saiga in front of me and his looks EXACTLY like it. Nice work, Blackmetal!
Try exporting with another model, if it has errors too you will probably need to reset maya and/or modo. As for the model, it looks really nice but I would like to see a stamped reciever instead of a milled one.
Blackmetal could you show us how it look on diffuse, spec and gloss ? I'm very intrested how you do it ( I think that I know, but please help me to prove it my head :DD ).
Cheers Sliterin ;]
REALLY awesome job on the texturing and Hard surface modelling...u nailed down a precise feel for the gun even though it is just a single color!...also shows me how much i need to learn
BlackMetal - thank you very much :]
it looks very good and not complicated in texture, only peeled paint looks quite strange (from positive side). Do you take this peeling stuff from damaged weapons or from normal textures with peeled paint?
I didn't mean the compression, I meant how tightly it grabs around the cylinder.
TL;DR: It looks just like the one in my RK-62 I had in the army :P
the RK 62 has 2 variations, old and new. minor differences between the variations are the front handguard, rear iron sight, grip, and the carrier spring. The old version had the enclosed carrier spring design where the spring is held on to the rod by a piston like in this picture. The newer version had the spring and the rod seperate, most likely because of cheaper manufacturing cost and its a simpler design, meaning it doesnt jam as much. the new carrier spring design can be seen in this picture
you probably had the newer version as in the new version the spring fits on the rod tightly to prevent it falling off and getting lost during field stripping (as its not held on by a piston)
now for the actual point: the ak47 utilizes the version of the carrier spring with the piston, and as you can see from the picture above with the piston, the spring is quite loose on it.

EarthQuake, it's just rubber button, as said you dont even notice it.
GarageBay9, right.

Bbob, yes but not all, only that visible somehow.
SltrOlsson, glad you like it.
MEGALOS, i use maya 2011.

Lovely render.

BadgerBaiter, thanks, try this one http://foto.mail.ru/mail/photoshooter/2 .
10k tris.
Really clean bake as well.
Could you post some wires when you get the time
One thing I did notice is your recoil spring seems to be to tight around the "tube"
It looks like circles around instead of a "spring"
Or change a bit the tube design : http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/notes/notesak/aktroubleshoot/akts11.jpg
That transferred well; am interested in wires as well..
bbob, Sebeuroc , thanks!

but it lost smoothing groups and some polygons.
Any thoughts will be really helpful.

Where do you see milled reciever?
Anyway, any ideas on modo import problem?
Maybe check for double faces, unwelded verts and such stuff.
Cheers Sliterin ;]
Still need to do some parts for it like opics, grenade launcher and ect.
Sliterin, sorry didn't saw your reply, i used spec and diffuse.

that is just epic. epic without bounds.
what rez are the textures?
Sliterin, most of peeling i just painted in ps, and some took from normal textures.
Olli, emmmm it's 4096x4096 as i indicated it on last screen.
sorry didnt spot that quite a high rez (probably not good for game engines) but that doesnt make the texture any less impressive
fantastic job.
