Hi guys it's been a while since i posted a WIP here in polycount. however i return with a new idea i hope to see to bear fruit before GDC. currently i made a blog stating my progress but i will post the images from my blog as well .
here is the layout of the entire scene/level that i hope to accomplish:
here is what i have so far for the entrance :
and here is a link to my blog (you must click on 2011 and 2010 to see the whole thing ) :
this is the entrance to a cannnibal altar the is deeper in the cavern im going to create the door to the cavern leading to the cannibal altar . the cannibal area is going to be a WARM color scheme witch is why i messed around with the lighting in the first screenshots..
ah, this is coming along very nicely. I like the shapes. Maybe you can accentuate them a little more. Like some of the big mushrooms could be tilted a little more. Change some of them around to give the variety. I like it very much.
still need to work on the main door leading into the cannibal altar area . however i got some work done today. please if you have a crit let me know !!!
Hey! I think you have some really beautiful lighting and colors here! Only thing I would say is that some of those spindly pillar things get a little TOO spindly and frail-looking in some areas - maybe try adding some knobblies and burls along their length to make them a little more substantial XD. Nice work!
thanks all those things you said is what im thinking of doing... the rocks i put on the pillars im going to redo or just take them out they kind of bother me . i will see what i can do...
btw im adding walls/ceiling and the door entrance to the cannibal altar that leads deeper into the cavern.
Oh wow, I didn't realize this was going underground. I really liked the loose corridor dynamic that was going on before the gate was added - especially in your post on the 13th. The addition of that entrance way definitely truncates the scene, which isn't a bad thing, just gives a different vibe in my opinion. If that original feeling of lateral expansiveness is something you wanted to retain, however, you could extend the scene and entrance way backwards from your last update another 50 feet perhaps so that it leave a little clearing and I think it would recapture that same feel.
I see that you seem to have the scene thought out pretty, though, so if that is too radical of a change or a departure from your intention, don't worry about it. But I think it looks cool, and look forward to see it progress!
I'm getting an "Alice in Wonderland" meets "Deliverance" feel.
The only criticism I have at the moment is that I'm having a hard time getting a sense of scale in the environment. I have no reference point or object at the moment to tell me what size everything is.
Right now everything could be tiny or huge - I have idea. This could be taking place in the tree roots of a forest with regular-sized mushrooms and skulls, or in a giant cavern with giant mushrooms and skulls.
Hm i think the sizes are not clear enough. What's the height of the "roof", the plants and the palisades. How big are the heads and the mushrooms. You should add things which make it possible to recognize from our world - plants are perfect for that but i guess you farn is too big. Our just add a character
p.s. the occlision shadow on the water is maybe a bit too strong.
OK so i added an UT3 character and scaled everything according to its size and i also had to re-do my lighting due to the lights not scaling along with the environment... is there a way to do that ??..
Finished more on the scene. i am more happier with the cannibal door entrance but needs more love as other things in the scene do. however i am very unhappy with the lighting!! i used lightmass this time.
Looks amazing! The only critiques I can give right now is that the transition from the puddle to the muddy/dirt floor looks very unnatural, and that the general flatness of the ground needs some variation and excitement.

here you go :
I was hoping to see more swampy features (bogs, tree, etc ..).
I like your scene now, but its almost volcanic in its "feel".
things i want to start adding are:
1. vines
2. rocks (small, medium)
3.skulls
4. water
5. a wooden door
6. cavern walls
well go from there.
mini update guys !!! ill try to post bigger updates from now on hehe ...
here is an update.

Vary up the height on the tongue pillar head deals.
Get a fading line in the background (mountains, trees, etc)
Add some warm smaller areas (glowy flowers, floating mushroom spores, etc).
Vary up the foliage size some. All the plants seem very uniform right now.
It's coming out great though, keep at it.
btw im adding walls/ceiling and the door entrance to the cannibal altar that leads deeper into the cavern.

1. i changed heights of the plants/stone heads.
2. this is underground therefore there is no mountains/trees.
3.will be adding spores and such soon.
