Personally I think this thread is really inspirational since it really shows off your progression. It itsnt a liniear progression but that because you try things out I feel.
Im liking the direction the prince is heading, but as someone mentioned, you need to thicken up the connection between the hair and the scalpt.
On top of that, I'd lose the wings on the monkey actually. I think it is stronger without them. OR make them redicoulesly small.
I think the best thing about your work is that it has so much life, whilst remaining stationary. I know NOTHING about character, but im almost imagining the little monkey dude to have a British accent like Geoffrey out of Fresh Prince. Not that this is important, but the fact that I even think it makes me think you've done a good job of giving your character, well character. Id agree about the wings, they just detract from the character itself.
xXmORpH3usXx: $5 special
JGcount: glad you like it, I'll have another look at the hair, thanks
scotthomer: It's awesome that you can picture that, I hadn't really thought of a voice but now I won't be able to think of a different one.
xXmORpH3usXx is correct on the wings so I guess a little context is necessary. The monkey is a reimagining of the Flying Monkeys from OZ, and was started for a GA mini almost exactly a year ago. I had done the full sculpt but never got around to the low-poly which always bugged me and since I seem to refuse to work on one model at a time I wanted to go and clean up the sculpt so that I can finish him up.
The wings aren't going anywhere. I do know they're the weakest part and I'm workin on em so you'll have to bare with me on the front but here's a sorta-comparison, (to me with the wings he looks like a flying monkey but without them he looks like a parachuting monkey):
pseudo-update, add a "title page" image to the first post as a sort of general guide to the pieces I currently want to wrap up. as I finish each one I'll replace the desaturated image with the proper colourfull textured version. Heavy Henry is there cause I still need to make the damned realtime version of him.
so, UPDATE TIME! been more than a little busy after my first month at Rabbit Hole which has been just awesome so far, and I've been able to complete the high-res of Prince not-so Charming:
hmm I suppose the grin really only works head-on, here's a tweak and the various outfit states. (the belts shold be hidden in pic two but I don't want to change the view angle and then try to find it again)
been posting this in waywow but not getting much notice, if you know who it is I've already done my job. Spending a lot of time on the low stages to get everything as right as I can before moving on, everything here is sub lvl 3 so plenty of room left to go.
So, unless anybody sees any glaring flaws, this is pretty much the final body anatomy I'll be going with for my little Earl project; though any kind of C&C would be kewl.
Whoa, the monkey and the uncharming prince are killa.
Earl's face still looks abit boxy, but the torso is super tasty!
his clavicles look like they meet abit far down tho and his buttox are too high I'd say, butt pads tend to be lower than the crotch, add like a 3rd on them?
lastly I think his lower legs from kneecap down may be tad weird. the odd pad on the cap and the pronounced muscles at the back, the indent on the front inner. Altho I imagine hes got skinny legs, best trust ref over junk I say lol.
Those shirt creases are nice. He's instantly recognizable so keep going with it man
awesome man, thanks, tried to fix him as much as I could. the face in particular has been bugging me all along, from some angles I think for sure I've gotten it, from others just not there yet.
thanks to the wonders of layers I'm able to easily throw on the signature expression and some extra facial hair which should help a bit more, followed by the anatomy corrections and general tweaks:
love that prince sculpt scudz, super slick style and execution.
Earl's lookin pretty good, I think you could spend some more time on the face though. It just looks like it's about 50% there... the base shapes and proportions are fine, but it would really pop with another couple detail passes, fill out and detail the fat and muscle areas a little more. I haven't read this whole thread though so my bad if you're already planning to do that heh.
One other crit is the cuffs on the pants, they're folding over themselves in a weird way that doesn't quite feel natural. Maybe snag a pic of some jeans and just straight copy the cuff folds, generally that's the only way I've ever been able to sculpt realistic cloth folds I was really happy with.
awww, thanks Ferg
still working on the face, one of the things that's been giving me trouble detail-wise is that Jason Lee is a bit chubby all over so close up pics of his face tend to look pretty smooth. I've spent some more time on him though and moved up to sub lvl 6, (I think I've spent about 6 or 7 hours on each level at this point). also tried adding some manly chest hair but I think I may leave that out of the sculpt as its a little too noisey to read properly.
Originally when I made the pants I was planning on tucking them in to the tops of his shoes, but after I made his shoes I realised that that was dumb. I've re-worked them now though with just the one nit tucked in at the front.
Hmm that's a tricky one, kinda prefer the left one mainly because it looks a little bit more solid, more polished. But the right one give some nice variety to the arms. Ahh tricky. I'd probably go with the left one in the end
I kinda feel that way character-wise the general consensus has been that the rolled-up sleeves added more to the silloutte so I've gone that route for now; they're a layer though so it's an easy change if it needs to be.
I've also added the all-important accessory. I know nobody's asked if there was a reason I was making Earl but there is, now lets see if anybody can guess...(that's not a ploy to get more replies btw).
It's a nice choice of character, he does have a characteristic look.
My main critique is towards the clothes you've made. The folds don't look natural. I'm curious to what tools you're using to sculpt the folds? I recommend using the slash 2 tool.
You should look at some references to see the differences of your folds vs real life ones. The place where the straps are looks like it's tied to clay rather than a leg with pants on.
I think his posture should be a bit more relaxed too. I understand that you will be rigging this character later on but it helps make the character look more natural if the pose is good. The hands look stiff especially.
Hope this helps!
Thanks Goraz, pretty detailed and helpfull crit, workin on him when I can, in the meantime I've been trying out the new Toolbag and having some funs with old models
okay, maybe a dametime post will work out a little better,
so I'm trying out Maya 2012 (longtime user but we've got max at work and it's growing on me) and I've got my first test bake for the head, 4k tri right now, which is a little high for the target but pretty low if it was Naughty Dog and easy to reduce further. I haven't quite figured out the settings for viewport 2.0 yet so sorry for the super dark shadows (I did try a marm render but the hair exploded when I brought it in).
also, one more high-poly, after going through all my reference again I've decided to stick with just the long sleeve's, I know the roll ups add to the silloutte but it's just not a shirt and T combo he's worn.

the buttons/laces are both sculpted and polypainted. They're that badass;)
He does in fact have a sweet-ass sword I just don't want to show it until it's a little more finished.
you should rethink your working terms, because i am not paying for my amusement right now :P
yeah, i like the laces the most right now! keep them!

JoseConseco: symmetry is now off,
butt_sahib; then my job is done
lol nice, "Let's fight like gentleman". Reminds me of Dudley from streetfighter
The PANTS update:
also refined the face some more

what throws me off a lil is the tip of the nose and the nostrils. the tip could use some smoothing and the nostrils could be a bit larger vertically.
i think the body hair would work much better if it weren't for the symmetry
I wanted to pass on a paintover, so in pokemon stylee "I choose you!" lol.
These are merely my observations, they themselves may be wrong. But it's the thought that counts.
I hope this helps abit.
nah I'm kidding, that's awesome man, thanksspent a little time with it and came out with this:
you roxorz
dunno if it really matters to anybody but this is sorta the main ref sheet I'm using; plus a half-dozen other solo pics:

next step: low-poly baked goods!

I'm finding it pretty interesting the way different programs camera's effect the look of the model as far as FOV stretching
