I hate to say it, but I like that '08 version you linked much better. You had some good features there; a strong brow, strong nose, strong chin, all a similar shape. What you've got now is that all the features are prominent. Not just the brow, nose and chin, but also the eyes, cheeks, mouth, and even the wrinkles on his head and the creases in the hair. All features are vying for attention, and it's a bit hard to determine character from that. Better, I think, to pick a few features to highlight and soften the others.
A same thing can be said of the proportions of the face. They're much more even than in your old version or in the body. A tad more exaggeration wouldn't hurt, IMO.
One thing you seem to do a lot on stylised work is make the eyes very big. Call it a personal preference, but I don't like it, certainly not on this character.
I made you a paintover (as always), but then I noticed that the eyes were really the main thing that made a difference (as the middle composition shows).
PLing: I wasn't thinking James Hetield at all but I love that thyat's who you see
xXm0RpH3usXx: Glad you like it man. I'm sure there's a thousand better anatomy ref's out there but I'll see what I can do for ya
Zwebbie: Sweet man, the detail was kinda deliberate but i see what you mean about spreding it out and ya the eye's were buggin me too. I've tried to take what i could from the paintover and fix 'im up for ya:
Shotgun: don't worry, I'll be lovin me some armour shapes for sure....I'm sure there's something wrong with that sentance;)
yea, hes looking miles better man maybe play with the corners of the mouth as they dont generally join straight to the fold as theres a bit of muscle there and maybe the cavity between the bottom lip and chin could be played with a tad to give him a stronger chin. Looking cool though bud
the pony tail irks me bigtime. At first I thought it needed to be placed higher up on the skull, but then I realized the connection point that's being held down by some kind of hair-tie needs to be Waaaaaay fatter. there's Sooooo much hair being tied down into something that's the diameter of a quarter. Also I think if you had a ponytail with that kind of mass, you`d see way more of it on the head too. It just lacks volume.
k, worked a bit on detail distribution around the body and played with the jaw some, good point CF,
Konstruct, nice feedback man, I've worked on the overall shape of the ponytail some, (though it's not refined at all) it's meant to have a little "highlander mullet" to it which is partly why it gets so big.
Thank you so much, really...
i'm working on an orc secretly (long time project it seems) and have massive problems with the back >.<
so thanks for helping out!
DKK: you're absolutely right and I knew as soon as I posted that something was just wrong there, thanks. tried to fix it and soften a few things just for you.
Really digging it so far, cool style.
The pecs are striking me as a bit odd though, the way they kind of sag on the outside. It's making them look a bit eh, 'breastlike' to me, anyway.
Tell ya what, as soon you finish up your little war there I'll take you on for an 1890's Irish Gravedigger duel based on actors who have appeared in a present day Cohen bros film

DIBS!! ^^
like the last head too. Forms are alot smoother and that moustache rules :P
as for the other dude, muchos better with the head changes. I'd prolly recommend going a little more subtle on the anatomy is all. Smooth brush over the forms then just push/pull out the bits that would naturally be more visible (photo ref is good for that... there's bits around the ribs that are more sunken in, the belly button is a good point of detail, underarm folds too)
i did a quick dirty paintover, just ignore it if u dont like it
i think the boots need a little more silhoutte, but nice overall feeling...
was it asked already? are you going for a handpainted look? i think that'd fit mighty fine...
xXm0RpH3usXx: cheers man, the boots are still pretty basic so there's plenty of detail to come. you're paintover there is pretty cool, but I think the folded down top has just been done to death at this point, whereas having the flap in front of the knee (which will be bigger than it is now) makes for a better silhouette when crouching/bending.
here's todays speedy, only a little over an hour this time:
today's got a little out of hand, I kept getting interupted for extended periods and by making it a larger bust it ended up taking somewhere in the 31/2 hour dept.
Today's sculpt; I don't do a lot of women (what a wonderfull sentance that was) but I think this one may have turned out half decent. Babies however are not very condusive to speed sculpting sessions, this was somewhere around an hour and half after all the interuptions:
yeah, except for Trapjaw the heads are all in a 1-2hr timeframe, it's remarkable how much you can improve (or at least think you can) doing these daily's.
With the girl here it was the first time I've tried using zSketching for hair, and while it's pretty rough I think once I get the hang of it that'll be the best way to do seperate sub-tool hair without an externally generated base.
1hr Batman bust after catching an episode of the animated series and already having the DK soundtrack loaded in winamp. same zSphere base as all the other speedy's.
i'd say thats your weakest piece since opening the thread...
the bizeps looks awefully small, the stomach area is fat and muscely at the same time and i dont dig the hairdo, but i wouldnt give too much on my 2 cents
an actual update this time,
wasn't really liking the breastplate, and the way i made the base wasn't helping me with the design I wanted so I've reworked it completeley and used ZB for all the details:
whoa not sure how i missed this thread up until now, awesome work. I particularly like the one hour studies, think ill have to give them a shot in the coming months.
Thanks guys,
Lenny: the 1hrs are enormously helpfull and you should absolutley give em a try
here's a little test polypaint, not to sure about the hair, I'm kinda feeling like it's a little tacked on (the colour not the sculpt) but I'm not sure how else to it:
i would give zsketching a try, or just make a mesh in your 3d modeling app of choice and sculpt it as a separate subtool. also i think it looks like hes wearing lipstick? :P nice just on the skin dones though
actually I jst meant the poly-painting part of it cause the seam felt unnatural, but thanks for the advice. quickly adjusted the lip shade and tweaked a few details. not a huge change but I'ma post anyways
That's Zbrush right? How did you get the eyes so pwetty?
Loving how this looks so far, can't wait to see the finished result. It's a lot of red and dark tones in there right now. Can't really decide if I like it or not hmmm..
nice update, on first glance the breastplate remembered me of the superman logo, sry for that...
i dont like the red shadow though, looks really unnatural...
(not comic style but implausible)
the skin is a little too red, too, i think.
is that "buttoning" on the fron of the pants sculpted or polypaint?

It's probably your artistic decision but I feel that the sculpted body has too much detail and too many small muscles highlighted.
could you maybe provide orthos from all sides for my reference folder?
(without armor)

All in all gr8 style, fun shapes, the armor could use them too.

OR-
you could just make the ponytail smaller. :P

xXm0RpH3usXx, here's your turnaround:
there's full size version here

Now when are we going to see something a little more realistic? *nudge nudge wink wink*

edit: ...or pretty much what DKK said ^^;
here's today's dude, wasn't where I thought I was gonna go but I think it turned out alright. 'bout an hour and a half this time:
here's a little prince update with a little softer muscles
But on a serious note, well done. I love your style.
And on an un-serious note, Where yo curly mustache at?
There it is!
here's todays speedy, just under an hour and half and from a quick zSphere base:
now then, PANTS!
Also great work on your speedies. Loving the personality of them. I really have to start getting into doing some
addiing the all important but virtually-invisible-in-the-final-mesh chaffe preventing under-shirt!
i think the boots need a little more silhoutte, but nice overall feeling...
was it asked already? are you going for a handpainted look? i think that'd fit mighty fine...
here's todays speedy, only a little over an hour this time:
dont dig the lower lip on the last one though...
looks like he is eating something?

cool design and so different from the standard...
goes straight into my concepts folder if you dont mind
spent a half hour adding a hat and shirt
wasn't really liking the breastplate, and the way i made the base wasn't helping me with the design I wanted so I've reworked it completeley and used ZB for all the details:
Love the quick sculpts, massive amounts of personality in them.

lips look much better now
Chris, some of the reds are from the zb render settings I'm using. I've added a slight red to the shadows cause I like the feel of it,

the skin is a little too red, too, i think.
