utterly glorious. they really have some great people doing their cutscenes, it's movie quality (framing, writing, lighting).. it's really fantastics to see such good quality in videogames. especially if you are getting old like me and remember guys like barry in resident evil.
can't wait for this! this winter is fucking ridiculous for games. i wonder if i can get a 3 months sabattical, reason: GAMES.
the lighting on that shot with the plane sitting in the distance is awesome. also, the daytime lighting looks fantastic I love how bright the image is, makes it so believably hot looking. Cant wait to play this.
Start Oct 1. Naughty Dog has partnered with Subway to bring you the "Taste for Adventure" promotion. With the purchase of a 30oz cup you get a code to play the multilayer in its ENTIRETY a whole month before the launch of Uncharted 3 on Nov 1!
What is really awesome about this promotion is that all the cash, levels and items you gain will transfer over to the retail game come Nov 1! You will also get to unlock special Naughty Dog logo'ed weapon skins and some Subway outfits. These will all transfer over to the live game.
Really cool promotion with a really corny commercial haha. Our beta was super sucsessful and got us a lot of great feedback. Hopefully you guys will now get to enjoy playing the entire multiplayer a month before the game comes out and the results will actually benifit you once you can play the game Only in the US right now, seems like were working with SCEE to try and get some early access for everyone across the pond.
Were all really excited about such a unique and awesome promotion. Hope you guys check it out!

Well fuck, I think I might have to buy a PS3... this looks fucking awesome. I've never played the Uncharted series, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.
As for another Art Book, I am not sure. It sure would be awesome, we have a wall with some of the concept art on it, I love getting to walk by it everyday. Some amazing stuff for sure.
i already preordered this, and actually got the ps3 bundle, since my little brother claimed my ps3 as his own. This game is soooo pretty looking! nov 1st can't come fast enough already! Kudos to everyone at ND! i am sure this game will be epic!
lol, you can tell he wanted to swear and react more, 'it would be better if there wasn't a room full of people'.
I loved his reactions, and how often the thought he was dead.
Cant speak for everyone here but I know I will drop what I can and answer any questions but idk about the other environment guys.
Im sure our character artists and texture artists will make a art dump on zbrush central as they did last time since they use zbrush so much.
I know a good handful of people here know about PC and junk but most seem to just lurk on the boards. Hopefully that will change, most of the guys here did such amazing work

They totally did:)
And, yeah, last time on ZBCentral was some awesome info on a pretty unique art production approach.
Anyway, looking forward to it, thanks in advance and I'll go back into my dark corner and prepare some questions
woa... nice!! i have been watching Laurence of Arabia to get ready for this game. That movie is visually amazing, and really well written. can't wait to play this game already!
Looking forward to this Especially any insight you can give on the ruined desert city (pic), nearly had a heart attack when I first saw that. Stop raising the bar so high damnit!
whats that they said about local multiplayer?
is it local online multiplayer? that is, can 2 players play online on the same system?
that is a very underrated feature in Warhawk I think, that you can play 4 players splitscreen online!..would be (expected?) good if Uncharted 3 did that, at least for 2 players.

That is indeed the case. You can play with 2 people split screen online while both of you are logged into your PSN accounts. So even if you play split screen you are leveling up your character
You can also play split screen for the co-op missions.
Great article. The last part about the streaming bug had me worrying for a second that the game might need a day1 patch to fix it for older ps3s. glad to know it got sorted though before disc production got under way.
It's also interesting to hear about the underwater parts for Uncharted1, sense God of War had something similar planned which got scrapped too.
The original proof of concept video on page 2 really struck a chord with me. It presented a more stylized approach on characters and I really wish Naughty Dog went with it. I thought I'd share why, but I'm gonna cover it with spoiler tag, 'cause realizing this kinda diminished my appreciation of the solid narrative that Uncharted games pack. So I thought you should at least have a choice:
Okay, so the core concept of Uncharted series is a spectacularlight-tone adventure with an every-man protagonist. And it's pretty obvious why ND pushed for amazing detail in characters and no matter how much they call it stylized realism they are still some of the most realistically perceived characters on the market. The amazing character work and all the witty little phrases that characters "randomly" drop, as well as swell animation really bring them to life, while the overall storylines make a genuine effort to flesh them out as real people.
But then you bring in the core gameplay mechanics - shooting. At people. As in killing things.
Like in the start of the first game, when attacked by pirates Drake gives Elena a gun an asks if she knows how to use it."Just point and shoot, right?" And then they kill like 20 people in the next few minutes. And then the adventure continues and the game tries to sell me this personalities as real people, who go further on their "light-tone" adventure. And I kinda stop buying it from that.
In a tremendous effort to bring in the most believable real-life every-man/woman characters, Naughty Dog really made me expect them to behave like ones(which is a breakthrough achievement actually). But then they built the gameplay around things that contradict with basic moral principle of 99% of people on the planet which is - killing other people. Logic suggests that Drake is an every-man so that he could be relateable by the player, or just that an every-man should be relateable by the general audience. And If I imagine myself killing 20 people just now, I would probably have a severe lasting shock and a mental breakdown. As much as most other people I hope.
I endlessly appreciate what Amy Hennig does for stories in games in general, but it's sort of like uncanny valley for narrative, where the more "real" you make the characters the more you have to have gameplay conform, while in uncharted gameplay shoots the story in the foot for me. It's really hard to maintain a light tone and introduce killing and it's very true of the original inspirations btw. Indiana Jones never purposefully and cold bloodidly killed anyone in a movie, as didn't Lara Croft(at least in the first movie - don't remember the second).
As far as I remember it was Evan Wells who said, talking about "move", that in order to have a compelling feature like this you have to build your game around it or otherwise it would feel like a slap on. But, in a way, the gameplay isn't built around characters enough(or vice-versa) to justify their actions.
So that's why I can relate much more to the characters in MGS games, for example, and find them much more real, even though they have tanks walking on organic legs, cyber ninjas and vampires.
Believability boils down to the character doing what you expect him to do in given circumstance.
And, despite a profound and very public accent on believable characters, Uncharted, in a way, is an opposite of that.
Oh an having got all he way here I kinda put my finger on it a bit more: Elena! We could assume that Drake did all kinds of shady things before, and killing people is allright for him(though it does make him scary), but Elena was supposed to be your typical journalist, who picked up killing like it's smoking or something. Also a pretty scary girl to hit on.
That's why I feel that going in a more obviously stylized character direction and embracing, in some ways, the macho jerk archetype would actually build a much more believable character. It would lower your real-life-like behavior expectations. And I'm not talking about going all Rambo on his ass(btw in the first movie Rambo didn't kill a single person directly), but providing proper moral grounding for uncountable killings would make a more believable character then most of the graphical marvels combined. Believably merging a Macho-hero with an every-man would be a challenge worth embracing and pretty unique and built around(which is very important) video game mechanics.
And once again, Uncharted games are superior to almost everything that is out there today, and they are awesome fun, but as a game artist I consider it my job to think how to make games even better, so I thought I'd share with you guys. Though I don't know if anyone would actually be interested, but what the hell.)

Cool 1up Article on the history of Uncharted from the start initial ideas after Jak2 all the way to Uncharted 3.
Page 5 has a cool little video showing the 2010 reveal trailer spliced up with some before and after shots of the trailer being made.
It's also interesting to hear about the underwater parts for Uncharted1, sense God of War had something similar planned which got scrapped too.
THAT'S CRAZY TALK!
