Hey guys i decided i needed to learn to model characters so away i went. As a result this is my first character model, its a low poly model, and is no where near completion. As you can see it is far from perfect, but hopefully with time and practice that will get better.
So today I modeled the boots, which i absolutely hate and am going to change later, and I also tested out his thighs. What do you guys think of the boots? Is there anything i should change? They just dont look like a space marines boots to me, is anyone else getting that feeling?

And if you can see anything majorly wrong with the thighs please tell me before i begin to round out edges and so forth.
Thanks,
big

One problem is the general etiquette about this, but I'll set that aside.
The biggest problem is that you learn much less by working direct from another artist's work as you would finding other forms of reference and working creatively with those bits of reference.
Why is this so? Well, that artist that made the original DoW2 model you're using for reference has already gone ahead and made all those creative decisions in what parts to model, what to make a texture, what proportions to tweak, and many other artistic decisions a 3D artist must make when working to translate an existing design into 3D.
It's still useful to study other artists' work, but it's very important to only do direct copies when you can really understand why they've done what they've done.
And as far as a standard space marine goes, they are all pretty much the same anyway, so its hard not to copy another artist.
Dont get me wrong im grateful for your feedback, just thought id explain myself a bit in response to your comments. With all that said ill try modeling the rest of this guy using other references and see how it turns out.
