Warhammer 40000 space marine WIP

Hey guys i decided i needed to learn to model characters so away i went. As a result this is my first character model, its a low poly model, and is no where near completion. As you can see it is far from perfect, but hopefully with time and practice that will get better.

So today I modeled the boots, which i absolutely hate and am going to change later, and I also tested out his thighs. What do you guys think of the boots? Is there anything i should change? They just dont look like a space marines boots to me, is anyone else getting that feeling?

And if you can see anything majorly wrong with the thighs please tell me before i begin to round out edges and so forth.

Thanks,
big

First thing's first. In terms of learning, modeling directly on another artist's model is a big no no.

One problem is the general etiquette about this, but I'll set that aside.

The biggest problem is that you learn much less by working direct from another artist's work as you would finding other forms of reference and working creatively with those bits of reference.

Why is this so? Well, that artist that made the original DoW2 model you're using for reference has already gone ahead and made all those creative decisions in what parts to model, what to make a texture, what proportions to tweak, and many other artistic decisions a 3D artist must make when working to translate an existing design into 3D.

It's still useful to study other artists' work, but it's very important to only do direct copies when you can really understand why they've done what they've done.

Well the thing is im not directly copying the artists model, im just using those pics for proportion and scale reasons. I plan to change many things about this model including his belt, his backpack, his pauldrons, possibly his stomach section, possibly his helmet and possibly his chapter icons/symbols. I also know what features i wish to include in the normal map and which ones i will model straight onto the low poly model, and they are not the same as this models believe me.

And as far as a standard space marine goes, they are all pretty much the same anyway, so its hard not to copy another artist.

Dont get me wrong im grateful for your feedback, just thought id explain myself a bit in response to your comments. With all that said ill try modeling the rest of this guy using other references and see how it turns out.

    Thanks,

What do you guys think? What needs to be changed?

I think we can get a better idea of the groin once you model the belt to go with it. As far as I can tell the legs are connected to the hips smoothly and it appears to match up with the reference. I say keep up the good work and start modeling the belt.

Hey, if this is still active... May I ask where you got the reference images from? I'm having a hard time finding a front, side and back view of a space marine.

Hey, if this still active, would it be possible for you to tell me where you got the reference images from? I'm having a hard time finding any 2d views of the front, side and back views of a space marine.
