Hey everyone, I've been trying to tackle larger scaled projects lately, but my computer really isn't powerful enough to even run UDK properly, and so, I'm dropping game art until I get a new rig and am now focusing on hi-poly modeling. And maybe when I get the new rig I'll make em game-res.
Alright, I wanted to do something in my room before I do anything else, so I did my closet door! Without the knob!! Pretty simple but I want to start simple and get harder. But even with this simple of an object I still have pinching at the corners :poly127:

there it is, I'm also trying to get better at presentation so any tips for that will be appreciated as well, should've included a wireframe, oh well.
Oh and I'm creating a new thread because my previous thread wasn't going to well, you know 7 posts in a row by me and always falling, so...yeah
Thanks,
Will

noob question but are you using the high poly in the engines? :P that would be a dealbreaker
But, in max I can goto about level 6 of turbosmooth
And what specs do you have?!
I feel I don't have to ask this but are your videodrivers up to date?
</another trial and error problem solving post/thread>
edit: and if anyone has any suggestions of things for me to model that'd be cool I really have no idea what to do
Finish up the door. If you could get a fancy pants handle done that would be sweet.
This is only if your going for an environment position, otherwise I think you have to tell us what your interested in modeling, Maybe!?
I like your door, no knob yet thou, maybe add fancy designs on the outside, you can still work on your turbo-smooth mesh if you kept the turbo-smooth modifier at the top stack preferably the last change you made to the model if so delete It as you already know what is looks like smoothed and add hinges, and those metal designs.
Best advice I can give you because well its a door.
Also the carvings look pushed in a little too deep into the door. Bring them forward just a bit.
But yea, bedazzle it with a door knob and put a frame around it too!

It's a cannon!!!!

Well when you post a generic door and some generic floor piece, there isn't much else that can be talked about as well as its effecting your work.
Maybe a gun or a power drill. Something with some curves and sharp edges, that's a good practice for SubD modeling.
Something like this...
autopsy - wow that would be quite a challenge, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet
well, here's the cannon still WIP ofc but just wanted to post
sorry for the crappy wire, think i gotta up the resolution on my renders
thanks
Posting your references will halp people understand your target as well.
Cheers
Might as well post an update, finished the cannon itself, and I'm now thinking the wood pieces are too large, and I shouldve started with more geo on the cannon because it's gonna be very hard to extrude the other cylinder parts out of it. >.< ah well might just have intersecting meshes
Besides that, it's a pretty good job man!
I hope you change your mind later on, this would look real sweet textured and in-game.
And I'm not completely dropping these models, once I get a better computer I'll be creating the low poly and textures for these guys.
my maing ref http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/preview.php?imi=10902&s=c:Hydrant&p=0&cid=19
thats it so far (the extruded piece is just a test)

well you know, crits on anything are welcome, thanks
You keep quiting projects. People put time in to the crits and even proportion guides, like Mike and then you just create something else. I get loosing steam and all that but maybe stay on something for a long period of time and keep getting crits. This is more of a sketchbook for random 3D models but you should be making a single thread for an big project =]
Taylor Hood: I said that these are all just high poly practice because my computer can't handle game engines, if thats what you mean by full projects. I did make the changes to the hydrant, and I'm planning on revisiting that hydrant once I'm done with the colt. I will admit I pussied out on the door. None of these are really full projects, so yeah I guess you could consider it a sketchbook. Although once I get a new rig, I'll be game-resing them up
+1
My laptop gets pissy if I start trying to manipulate a single mesh with more than 15k polys in maya. And it will run the UDK just fine...
If you can do High Poly work you can do game res work. If you can't do High Poly work, you can still do game res work.
Keep in mind people have been doing game res 3d since before the Single Core 1 GHZ processor even made a debut...let alone even a 256mb graphics card.
All that aside here ya go.
@grimm - thanks for that pic, really awesome

You know the drill, any comments or crits are welcome
Oh and this is my last hi-poly only before I do a whole gas station I hope

and as always, I'm playing with renders, I'm liking my most recent ones
Nother update, changed side detail to something more complicated to stop being a lazy bum after I found this ref: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3143/2618895951_3328dc46a7_o.jpg
Did some proportional changes as well.
Any comments or crits are welcome
just posting a VERY small update because I'm ready to move onto the pump itself, which I've already tried and failed at.

YYAAAAA aright just made miself some hotkeys and a custom UI today. I also did some preliminary sculpts on arsh's basemesh and I think the going level by level using clay tubes and dam-standard is working in my favor. it'd be cool if any of you could recommend and matcaps or sculpting techniques
Thanks guys
alright I've been told it looks like a piece of poop so ya I'm gonna restart it with refs

alright, no more dicking around, time to get back into game work, and I've started with some style exploration, mainly inspired by Jfletcher, Darkcrusader and JasonL
Not particulary happy with my brick. Viewed in UDK with 1024 diffuse normal and spec. and i know thats huge for a brick im scaling it down.
Personally, I think that the spec might be just to dull, the diffuse and normal I'm happy with but that spec, not really sure hehe.
I'm also 100% willing to continue and finish this off completely if anyone has crits to offer, this was actually very good sculpting practice.
Alright, will post flats tomarrow becuase its a quarter to one AM right now and I have school tomarrow, so yeah..thanks

crits are welcome, thanks
Regarding the textures, all I can see on the render is diffuse and normal. Push that specular, but make sure you keep in mind what parts of a brick or stone are actually shiny and which parts (like dirt filled crevices) aren't.
In terms of the Zbrush, I would recommend checking out http://www.pixologic.com/ for some sweet matcaps and such. In fact, the community as a whole is a great resource for advice in all departments, plus the ZClassroom is top notch. Or you could always check out speed sculpting videos on youtube or vimeo to pick up little tips and tricks. If you'd like I can record a speedie sometime so you can see my workflow (which is by no means perfect in anyway, but it may help you in some regard.
Keep it up man, huge improvement from the first props I saw from you. Just keep in mind what others are saying about sticking with things. Good luck.

and in regards to zbrush, trust me ive seen every timelapse imaginable, from stoofoo to selwy, and yeah the pixolgic tuts are great, I basically know the zbrush interface and what not, its just the actual process of sculpting I gotta learn hehe, and a speedie by you would be cool, that alien sculpt was really cool.
And thanks bro I'm planning on doing something bigger today
viewed in UDK gonna make final pics for it
