thanks, tried diamant could not find a packer in there. cant use headus because it imports obj's then when i bring it back into maya, I loose all my referenced shaders that i assigned (internal shader app) so i need to keep thinks in maya. Also tried http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx but that uses obj's also. still no luck
so roadkill seemed to be the thing im looking for but its no longer around...
I know its nice to tweak stuff afterwards but I always first model and then unwrap things, I don't shade or do other stuff in between. I mean if you want to tweak stuff afterwards you could still use the internal stuff of Maya
Maybe accept that the build in Unwrap tools are from 10 years ago and that many great apps went the OBJ export / import road.

anyway sloppy autodesk, they still haven't tackled UV mapping in either Maya or Max well
