Hello!
I started working on this UMP 45 because I felt I needed to practise my eye for references. Been having some problems translating references into my models. I also felt this was a good model to practise on because I need to work on my normal map baking skills.
This is what I have so far:
It's a very rough blockout, and I'm currently trying to make sure the proportions are correct.
These are the refs I've been using:
Please let me know if there's anything you think is wrong.
Cheers!

Just started sub-d. Still not much detail there, but I'm getting the main shapes there.
Please let me know what you think!
Other than that I am looking forwart to the next updates
I've smoothed out the grip now, as well as tweaked and added some other stuff.
Please let me know what you think!
Cheers!
Having some problems with the butt.. But at least I managed to get the hinge part OK.
Please let me know what you think!
Cheers!
Been working on the details that will be visible in first person view, and I've been refining some areas.
Hope you like it so far!
Thanks for mentioning the front sight!
I've gone over the refs and fixed it!
I also made the top block thinner, just like you said. I think it looks better now.
Is this better?
Thanks!
is it looking better?
It's basicly just an occlusion map and a dark background color, so not much to crit on now I guess.
Just wanted to show you the progress I've made.
Still working on blocking out the diffuse.
Please let me know what you think!
Cheers!
and yeah, like Alec says, the texture is too uniform, but at least you haven't gone the way of Rainbow Six Vegas and just covered the thing in a rusty carpet texture. Don't forget there's probably a fair amount of text and symbols on the real one that you could add in.
I was thinking about making it more worn, just for that purpose. I could also try to add some slight color variation to the different parts, but that wouldn't do very much to the end product.
It is pretty bland looking in real life too.
Kitteh: I didn't notice that myself until you mentioned it actually.
I'll see to it, and add a few polies there so that it looks better in first person view.
Thanks guys! I appreciate it.
Also, the bottom of the pistolgrip could still stand to be wider.
Sorry about that. I wasn't done! I had a chat with a friend of mine who gave me some really great crits, so I'm currently working on improving the sense of materials.
This is what I've got so far:
Cheers!
From the feedback I've been getting it is.
If you look at the one from MW2 you'll see its quite a bit lighter and with a hint of blue (http://www.themodernwarfare2.com/mw2/multiplayer/weapons/sub-machine-guns/ump45/)
I'll definately tint it more blue today.
Here's a good gun ref page if you were unaware of it. Has the UMP along with lots of other guns. Usually many refs and high res.

I'd definitely spend some more time on the presentation of this piece. Add some more interesting lighting and play around with tweaking material definitions.
Crits appreciated!
Cheers!
I really want this as good as possible.
Please let me know what you think!
Personally I'm happy with the look, but I'd love to improve it so that others think it look good too, but I'll need some feedback for that.
It definitely looks good, for blandness I suggest just some wear and tear or something man. http://www.themodernwarfare2.com/mw2/multiplayer/weapons/sub-machine-guns/ump45/
If you check out that 3rd pic you'll see how much dirt and scratches are on the gun, also is your UMP a different model or something because there's so much interesting stuff on the side of theirs while yours from the FPS view especially is and I hate to put it this way because it's a good model.... It's not spectacularly interesting to look at.
I'd rather not compare my game model with other game models. I'd rather compare it with real-world weapons. Plus, I don't like the modern warfare weapons, as I think it looks like they've been hit by a small meteor shower. ^^
However, I think it's a great idea to put some more color onto the metal. I'm currently playing around with some purples to see if I can get bring forth some interesting looks.
And yes, their model is not the same as mine. Judging from all refs I've seen, they have either a heavily modified UMP45, or they've made one up.
I've actually been thinking about adding some tactical attachments to it, just because I want it to look more interesting from first-person view. But I don't want to modify it the way they have.
Honestly I don't know what they've done to their model. Is it a prototype of a new UMP? I'd love to know!
Sorry, random comment. Looking good Disting, though I still miss the camo ; P
Increase general light intensities a bit. Play around with perhaps adding some color to one or more of your lights in the scene. Maybe add a more interesting backdrop.
Currently I'm trying to make the first person view as interesting as possible, without losing the feel of realism.
I've added a laser sight now. Please let me know what you think!
it looks a little flat when its in first person
So, given that you'll have to apply a tiny bit of artistic licence inless you're modelling a brand new weapon, think fading along the edges where it gets brushed aginst stuff a lot, dust in some of the deeper recesses, maybe a few little scratches, and what I see quite a lot on older guns is where something had been rubbed soo much that the paint has just slowly faded off
On a more technical note, a reflection mask would add more interest to the side lighting, and you might be able to squeeze some fingerprints in somewhere too....
Hope it helps!
Very interesting feedback!
Currently I'm modeling something that'll hopefully make the FPV a lot more interesting!
Will post here later today!
I'll try that!
Meanwhile, here's an update with the WIP-Ready Mag.
The extras are nice as well. I agree with what drav is saying.
Tomorrow I hope to get the time to remove half the stock, seeing as it's for first person view primarily.
This will allow me to put more UV space for the iron sight and other pieces that require a bit more texture resolution.
Thank you all for your feedback! I greatly appreciate it.
