Hey I am currently trying to make modular pieces for the UDK. I have 3ds max snap grid set at generic units with a 16 unit grid unit in place. I also have checked align to vertex and grid checkboxes. The problem I am encountering is that when I manually enter a number that is divisible by 16 (example 208 width for a cube) sometimes its snaps halfway between grids. I feel that the pivot point in causing this but I cant seem figure out how to fix it. Anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Your objects pivot (or "local pivot") should be snapped to the grid also.

First set your ref coordinate system to local and use pivot point center (first image). This will show you where your local pivot is, its the same as if you select the object before you enter sub-object mode (vert edge ect..).

Go to the Hierarchy Tab, turn on "affect pivot only" and snap it to the grid. Now when you move the object, the pivot will be on the grid also. This is a critical step in getting it to line up correctly in UDK (and just about any other editor that uses a grid).

I did what you said but am still getting the problem. Mabey I misread one of your steps? This is what I do.

    1. Open 3dsmax

    2. Set grid to 16 generic max units.

    3. Make a cube and put length at 272

    4. The pivot point is on the grid but the box's edges are between the main grid lines.

if you need me to post screens just let me know.

Never mind I figured it out :). Had to click on the blue box in the middle and drag to a corner vertex

Just draw a 272 unit box with grid snap turned on, but if you really want to know why the keyboard entry is off...

That's because it builds from the center of the box and there isn't an even number of blocks on either side and the center of your box falls in the middle of the center row. You need an even number of blocks on either side for center of your box to line up with the grid.

Take your number divide it by 16 if you get an odd number its going to be off.
272/16 =17 blocks total across. 8.5 blocks on either side, your off the grid.
256/16 = 16 blocks total across. 8 blocks on either side, you're on the grid.
288/16 = 18 blocks total across. 9 blocks on either side, your on the grid.

You can correct for this, by offsetting the start position of the box by half a unit.
In the Keyboard Entry you type:
    x8
    y8
    z0
    Length 272
    Width 272
    Height 272

Or move your box x8 y8 after its created.

Note: your box will now fall on the grid, but your pivot is off.
