I've long been a fan of Japanese cinema, especially the period samurai films - Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, The Sword of Doom. What I'd like to create is a heavily wooded, moonlit setting containing traditional Japanese sculptures/building tall trees and moody lighting from old stone lamps. Possibly a temple visible in the distance.
I'd like to go for a painterly style for this challenge. I'll be using the film Ninja Scroll as a kind of style guide for painted backdrops and elements in the scene.
Aims:
- Create a rich 3D scene using a painterly approach for texturing in the vein of the artwork of Ninja Scroll and other anime films. This with the aim of improving my 2D painting skills.
- In the industry I'm a character guy but I've been wanting to do some environment work for a while now and this seems like a good opportunity to get stuck in and work those lethargic muscles.
- Utilise a free tool for the majority of the 3D work (Blender for consideration)
