Mudbox - Modeling Belts and Buckles

Hey guys, i saw a video that showed sculpting in Zbrush, and the way he did buckles/belts was to mask out the area, then extruded the surfaces, is there a way to do this in Mudbox?

freeze the part you want to raise... invert freeze and do a flood with the sculpt brush...
but there is no way to extract geometry from surface in mud...
