I love it when developers but awesome bonus content in games, like concept art galleries and behind the scenes videos. I know these days a lot of that stuff is on the web, but can anyone think of games with bonus content like that? I could only think of a few...

the limited editions of most games ususally have something like that:
assasins creed
modern warfare 1&2
Bioshock
mass effect 1&2

just few off the top of my head, I usually will grab the limited edition of games for that behind the scenes stuff.

GoW series has always had the best free behind the scenes content available in it. GoW 3 had 3+ hours of behind the scenes show casing every department from sound to art to tech art. Was really great.

Ratchet and Clank series have always had cool behind the scene stuff with the Insomniac museum in it.

Halo also has cool behind the scene stuff, although I think that only comes with special editions.

Silent Hill 2 had some great documentary content packaged with the collector's edition detailing the process behind the characters, environments and musical score. Well worth checking out if you're a fan of the series.

There was a cool one on Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. I can't remember if it was on the bonus disc, or an extra on the game itself. But it was a day in the life kinda thing. It's older of course, but still cool.

Yes, it was great. It had been a pretty long time since I saw a making of of a japanese video game. There was a pretty high contrast between all those programmers and artists sitting in the cubicles and then Akira Yamaoka stepping in with his fancy leather outfit. Man, I need to get my hands on some more making of videos. Great thread!
Edit: Does anyone know why the face of one of the mocap actress' face is censored?

Yeah, that's the one. I thought I remembered seeing it on YouTube.

Haha, yeah, he really does look the part, right? It was great seeing him work on the sound effects as well as the music. Silent Hill 2 really did stand out in terms of the sound design.

I liked the section on the development of the monsters, especially how the designer said the straight-jacketed creature was inspired by his friend walking into the studio with a hooded sweatshirt on, listening to some tunes. Great insight into how ideas can come from anywhere.

Definitely one of the best examples of a making-of I've seen.

I kinda lost the interest in behind the scenes... when i was behind the scenes. Magic is gone.
It's just a bunch of dudes with computers.

Now if we're talking making of's now those are neat. Especially when they show off features and what not that makes their games special. Like alan wakes ink-shadow-post-effect stuff or different systems.

Metal Gear Solid 2 had Kojima playing around with a Tanker model made of legos. Then he proceeded to destroy it with a toy version of Metal Gear. Nuff said.

Oh yeah! I remember when I was about 14 I used to watch Resident Evil making of videos on the Youtubes. I remember the way they planned out there maps was to make them in lego. =]

I dig seeing the concepts and where the game has gone from an idea to a finished product. Its crazy seeing the original designs for Kratos and then seeing what he evolved too. That's what interests me more than the tech side of it, the creative process.

The Halo 3 Special Edition comes with an incredible behind the scenes/making of dvd. It covers pretty much every aspect of the design of the game, a couple hours worth of stuff. I have watched it at least a dozen times now, as its a great source for inspiration.

It also has a segment that covers a 24 hour day at Bungie. It gives you a tour of the studio and shows you what a typical day in the industry is like.

Gametrailers.com has video dev diaries for games all the time, and forums like this one, zbrushcentral.com and conceptart.org showcase art from games all the time. Personally I go for that rather than paying extra for the game...cuz I'm cheap!

Stubbs the Zombie has commentary that reminds me of the commentary you would hear for something like Futurama. It's informative and yet entertaining.

Also, the soundtrack for that game is great. Hipster bands covering 50s and 60s era songs.

I like the videos like the mortal combat posted not the interviews type of videos with effects layed on to make it look like the developer is in the game. I like the go around the office type of stuff: this is Steve, this is where we do animation, as you can see today there is a such and such funny bug we are trying to sort out, this is the game tester Jester...

One that I remember watching was the making of TES IV: Oblivion. It came with the collectors edition of the game on a separate DVD:

It was a nice insight, especially a few years ago. It covers what they did for their E3 demo as well. It also introduced me to the idea of taking photographs of architecture and environments and using them for textures.

The Uncharted games have the best 'Making Of' videos in my opinion, because they are more in-depth that most I have seen. Out of everything you can unlock in games that doesn't impact gameplay, 'Making Of' videos are probably my favourite.
