Render to Texture >:O

So, I've never baked anything in Max before. I've baked in Xnormal and Maya, but I thought I'd try branching out a bit since most of my modeling is done in Max anyways (may as well just use one software package if I can). Since I'm completely new at render to texture in Max, I picked up 3dmotive's tileable floor in UDK tutorial which covers baking. Good stuff; everything worked fine.

After following the tutorial, I did a quick mailbox model in max (high and low poly). I laid out the UVs on the lowpoly AND the high poly. I proceeded to go step-by-step through the baking process with the tutorial again, but using my own models this time instead of theirs. For some reason, it isn't baking anything but the ray miss checks into the maps. I've tried adjusting the cage, re-UVing everything, changing the scanline render settings, resetting pivot points and re-alligning the models, and even importing the meshes into the tutorial scene and baking with THOSE render settings (all of which were the same, but sometimes I miss things so it was worth a shot).

I'm at a loss here. I have no idea what it is that I could be missing. I tried combing the forums (I hate seeing the same thread crop up a hundred times for the same problem), but haven't seen a problem similar to this. I'd rather not go through the trouble of reinstalling max (since the tutorial file is baking fine I really don't think it's an issue of a corrupted install). I've included images of my render settings, and an example of what the baked maps look like when finished.

Help please =]

Did you reset XForm on all objects?

FYI, you don't need to UV-map the high poly mesh in order to bake it.

You could try un-checking the "Use Cage" option in the Projection Options dialog, and then simply tweak the ray-cast distance in the numerical field next to that check-box.

That's probably going to be a lot easier than messing around with cages etc.

Thanks guys =] Neither suggestion worked, unfortunately, but I appreciate the feedback. Anyone else ever had this problem?

I'm pretty sure I've had this problem before, but I forget how I fixed it. I know it was something I forgot to do in the end though. A few things to try, although I don't know for sure which ones are required for normal maps as my knowledge on normal mapping is fairly basic.

    1. Reset x-forms on everything.
    2. Reset pivot points on everything.
    3. Apply a flat white ray-trace material to High and Low meshes (Not sure if this is just for AO bakes though).
    4. Try turning light tracer on, and adding in a skylight (Again, maybe just for AO).
    5. (More for my knowledge) I see you're rendering to a target map slot. What does this do exactly? I always have mine set to none.
    6. Did you remember to expand your cage? It looks really tight in the image.

Sorry if none of that helped :(

Weird, what's been suggested often helps, and your setup looks right. If you don't get any results, I'd be happy to look at your max file and see if I can bake it.

What happens if you change "Resolve Hit" to "Closest" in the Projection Options?

Might want to try and get it working on a simple polygon plane and sphere or somthing simple first. Do it in a new scene. It will help rule out some of the variables.

Do you have any funky materials applied to either object? The cage also looks really close to the projection object. Maybe try push it out a bit.

I'm not crazy about the cage options in max. Try this:

Uncheck use cage and set resolve hit to closest.

Dutch for the win =] It had a mental ray Arch & Design texture applied to it and that was screwing it up. Thanks for all the help folks, and thanks to Mike from 3dmotive offering to look at the file and give me a hand ^___^
