RIP Backup Partition

At 2pm today I declared my backup partition dead.

I messed it up yesterday when i was trying to merge 2 partitions together and in the end something went wrong. and now. i lost 250gigs of material.
Being 20gigs of references All my concepts to trash

Funny enough im not that pissed. I see this as a chance to start something new.

So yeah.. give me some links to cool concepts

I guess most of the stuff there..that was important were the references you know.. gigs of conceptart and shit.
and programas and lots of tutorials.. but those i can downloaded later..
My work was safe tho' on another place

there's some recovery software where you can try to get back stuff from a drive that's recently been wiped, normally, if there hasn't been new actual data written on top of it, it can recover most of the stuff.

I used a programa like that. but the files recovered were all corrupted.

Yea... that's painful... It makes my backup drive hurt just thinking about it.
I think its time to make a back up of my back up...

Like you said, its a chance at a fresh start. I know when I built my new machine a few weeks ago I took the opportunity to clean house, it was pretty nice. But then I was organizing the things I had instead of starting from scratch... that just sucks...

I've lost about 90% of all the work I've ever created digitally to a series of ridiculously unlikely hardware failures... doesn't even phase me any more. Actually kinda feels good... like getting a brutal artistic enema. Sure, you're walkin' funny for a couple days, but after that you feel free as a bird.... right? Guys?

Yeah I had a hard drive fail on me, it really sucked the first time.

The second time I lost a hard drive (after re-downloading everything I lost the first time) was cause a junkie broke into my room in the hostel where I live cause I am broke and stole a load of hardware, including my second external (and my PSP).

Yeah, life sucks.

All the 3D work that I ever made and collected for the past two years was on a hd that randomly broke off the fire wire port within the device itself. But yeah like previously stated, was an intense artistic enema.

Life goes on. If it's not paid work, what's the harm? I've seen $800 raid controllers fail and kill partitions. Nothing is "safe".

sure nothing is safe but a Raid 1 is far more reliable than no raid at all.. and raid failures are even more rare than HDD failures.And Raid provides a backup without having to do anything apart from set it up which is like 2 mins. and if its duplexed you get instant back up and better read times..

I'll say it again, try some of the recovery tools in Hiren's Boot Disk. I have rescued partitions that had been formatted with that disk.

Ha! My Raid does a pretty good job of backing things up, but it still needs to be backed up occasionally to something external that isn't accessed as much as the main drives.

Just remember the cardinal rule of RAID:

RAID 1 is not a backup!

RAID 1 protects against hardware (the physical drive) failure only. If you accidentally delete a file, it's gone on both of the drives. If a file becomes corrupted, it's gone on both drives - etc.

I use a 500GB RAID 1 to protect my work, but I make regular image backups of the array to an external 1TB hard drive that's stored locked in a container on the shelf. It's saved me before!
