Can't see the video here yet but if it's a reboot movie done well, that could be great. It kind of gives a nice gilt edge to the death of Midway.
I'm not sure who ended up with the rights to the game series (Warner Brothers?) but here's hoping that a great studio comes out with a Mortal Kombat: reboot game as well
this looks awesome. i always wondered why there wasn't a good fighting game film, the characters and back stories are all set go, anyway looking forward to this..........
omg, if this is a modern film noir type thing with explosively gorey hand to hand combat, sweet GOD I want me some.
"Find Shang Tsung...and finish him."
bwhahaha
You should disregard anything claimed by a poster on Kotaku...the dregs of the internet.
Looks good to me. I reckon its a movie (thats been greelit). The cast is too high-profile (Jerry Ryan, the gangster from Dark Knight, etc.)
Looks like they are doing a Batman Begins job on it, I don't think they neccesarily should though. MK has some very good 'out there' characters. Don't really like Baraka's look either...but I really want to see this film
Now THAT is how to do a MK movie. Love the feel to it, and the realistic angle. I'll gladly take a dark and realistic take on the MK universe that isn't a slave to the mythology aspect. Would be very cool to see this take on it.
saw on one site it was confirmed its for a film. but another site said that michael jai white thought he was working on a promo for a game. so who knows.
question is.... will they use the original music theme song, or will they just play it during the credits. doesnt really suit the new persona
Oh man! I'm glad they took away the other dimensions and planets and blah blah blah. Works great in games...but just doesn't translate well in a movie setting. I love what they did to reptile, and Baracka.. hell yes. This is something I can get behind. Now, I wonder how they would explain Raiden in a more realistic setting.
Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.
The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.
Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.
Looks like a good start for a reboot. I like the more reality-grounded characters. But damn, those blades in Baraka's arms could be soooo much better done.
Man that was an awesome video. Very creepy, cool and dark; good style. If they made it just like that, I would definitely be in.
I think I could even separate myself from the fact that it's Mortal Kombat because the concept is so cool. I like that short better than the last 3 or 4 MK games I played...
I have to say I think this film pitch looks awesome. I hope someone picks it up tbh. Its dark, gritty and bloody gruesome.
But!
I hate that films these days have to explain everything in a "realistic" way. Mortal Kombat is about a Gods, Demons, and Mortals kicking shit out of each other and using magic to do it. It doesn't need to be scientifically explained so that the audience "gets it".
They may well have demons, etc in the story. Maybe scorpion/sub zero in this film are demons. How would they explain Goro anyway...
Anyhoo. Please keep the magic and shit. Not scientifically viable.
Interesting to note, gavku. I hope he's working for them? That'd be bad if they just lifted it..
Huh, I wonder about that. I think this is essentially a fanfic, being an unofficial teaser/test footage, so they might not have to pay - fair use and all. When we do new business pitches at work to show clients, we can use anything we like to bring it together. It's fine as long as we do it out of our own pocket and aren't earning anything for it. Dude has a copyrighted likeness of a MK character in his portfolio and that's fair game, so I'm curious who owns what in this case.
I definitely wonder who paid for it, as it's pretty damned good quality for a sales pitch.
I find it awesome that they create this new movie, I only find it a bit sad that all the history of the characters is ignored and they're given a new background.
Nevertheless I can't wait to go and watch it.
Interesting short film/pitch/trailer/whatever. It looks a lot more dark than the other movies, which it should be. The scorpion reminded me a lot of the Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat 3 though; http://www.umk3.net/images/portrait/shang_tsung.gif
I feel that it wont be COMPLETELY realistic. it will still be in the realm of fantasy, but in a more believable way. either way, i dont really care that they ditched the background story for the characters. Im actually kind of glad they did. I find it way better that they are making our favourite game characters into believable real life characters. gives you hope of meeting them on the street! muahaha! its like all the other movies and the background stuff were just old wives tales, but this is the truth behind the stories. to some, they would seem like immortals. to others...freaks...
Dude has a copyrighted likeness of a MK character in his portfolio and that's fair game, so I'm curious who owns what in this case.
Looking at the head alone on his site, its not a MK character, and is named AC00. Its only a "licensed MK character" after it was placed in that short, unless he did intentionally want to make a scifi subzero. There aren't any descriptions on the page, so who's to know
It was added July 12, 2009, and despite how long some things take to make, somehow i doubt that short was made over a year ago.
This is interesting, hopefully he did get credit for it in some way. When you overlay the still & the render, its the far left head flipped horizontally, and scaled a little.
Why does Johnny Cage crawl then take a cigar and smoke it while Baraka beheads him? How are they going to explain realistically a story about a bunch of aliens, demons, wizards, sorcerers and gods? Why does a game series that old need a realistic, dark reboot movie? Hell, why make another damn video game movie period, especially if it's going to completely change the shitty story from a fighting game?
Maybe they are doing exactly what needs to be done to make a "video game movie" work..... its not a movie of the game. its a movie based off ideas of the game. its the directors take on it. expecting a movie to be exactly like the game is like expecting a movie to be exactly like the movie... you CANT compare it if you want to get any enjoyment out of it. take it for what it is. yes... the original story is about gods and demons and all that stuff. but this movie isnt going to be the original story, so scrap that shit

Dunno if its for a new game or a new film, both are being rebooted, but either way it gets a thumbs up from me. Really impressive.
GET OVER HERE!

I liked it a lot...but yea hard to say if its a promo for the movie or the game...either (or both) could show up at E3...dunno.
I'm sad I liked the original, I dont like the look of this new one it might give me nightmares.
It's a trailer for the movie, and the game is tied into the movie / vice-versa.
Apparently, it's just a short that was created to test reactions for a possible R-rated movie in the future.
who knows... I think it could be good but I dont like the direction they are going...

struck by lightning?
he will probably just be a monk or something.
If coming soon is right, it's proof of concept for a movie and has a badass stunt/fight choreographer attached to it.
Looks a little campy, but very good.
True though that may be, he did have a link to back up his claim:

oh shit! I thought it looked familiar!
really? I thought he looked realistic. I've seen body mods less extreme than his.
The trailer/short fucking rocked. I'd see that movie so easily. I've seen every mortal kombat movie
The clip was awesome, really hope this gets done and it keeps this style. A rated R Mortal Kombat movie? Yes-fucking-please!!
Thanks for the link, homie!
yes plx.
Nah they just probably paid him to use it in the clip...
An actress talks about the video.

No thx.
