Obviously I cannot actually change the sentry as stated by the rules, but this is what I had in mind, it fits perfectly with my sentry idea as it resembles a laser, this fits into the carpentry theme as 'laser levels' or 'laser measures' are often used in woodwork/carpentry:
Here's some references I will base the making of the sentry around, the references fit perfectly with the TAGM idea (these top piece references will be mounted on a stand):
Baby Stomper obviously they aren't going to look exactly like this, these are just basic concepts I'm going to draw up some concept art from them, this is because I have an issue (dunno what the hell it is) where I can't draw stuff from the top of my head (other than stickmen) I can only copy things, so the idea is to draw certain details from these images to produce the concepts for my sentry.
So much of the stuff in TF2 looks beyond the 50's style, the sentry itself for instance and if you look in terms of hats look at the new Safe'n'Sound headphones, also another thing aluminium bats like the Scouts bat didn't even exist around that time period, so there's a lot of things that don't fit, but like I said these aren't going to look this high-tech, I also need to add alot of wooden materials to the sentry to fit my woodwork theme.
Also I've finished the hat, rendering it out now as we speak.
i wouldn't say that you've finished the hat yet, we haven't even seen one wip picture, so i guarantee people will see some things that need to be touched up.
A few people elswhere were saying it looks too detailed, I agree, I think although once I texture it and with TF2's phong shading it will look less modern.
neat, although i have a safety hat laying around here, and that one looks far to .. "out of theme" try something a bit more soft and rounded, less hard edges
I agree. The arms holding the earphones have too sharp edges, as well as the fancy stripes at the top looks to modern stylish and detailed, IMO. Apart from that, it looks great!
Perhaps you could try making the top of the helmet a bit more like this so that i would look sort of like an add-on to the original hat/a similar hat?
EDIT: Sorry that I couldn't find a more detailed picture
actually i think all he really has to do, is make the outline, because other hats like the mining light are all simply made to fit around his hat, not replace the hat entirely.

Kalva I know that, that's why this hat is different.
Ok I managed to fix it, I simple made the transparent texture on a seperate .vmt and .vtf and applied it to the model, I also played around with the colors:
I think the transparency looks quite bad so I think I'll make the bars by using cylinders in max and just apply a material to those.
For now what do you think? Espicially about the coloring.
what if you made the mesh cover into glass. that way it wouldnt obstruct the face and cause less noise. also tf2 rarely uses alphas (if at all). the best bet stylistically would be to model out what you want alpha'd and see how that looks. good work though. model came out looking good.
I agree, anyway I made the bars using cylinders rather than a transparent plane *(Guess I beat screwonhead to that request :P) and made different textures, please rate the best one, anyway Kalva I tried using orange on the bars and it looks god-awful. Even before without the cylinder-styled bars.:
Default Black:
Orange:
Grey:
On second-thought I should tone down how light colored the grey is on this, and go for a darker shade.
I think I'll take psyke's advise and lower the front guard. I'm also going to have to completely re unwrap this now that the guard is seperate and uses a flat texture, I'm thinking of making the headphones flat textures and just unwrapping the main helmet section.
Made some huge changes as per the requests of other members from another forum I posted this on, I completely redone the UV Map so everything is much more clean and produced a set of more refined colors, It was requested that the grey texture be darker and the frame be black, also there were requests that the connectors remained black on all of the different colors, anyway here are the new colors to choose from:
Wow really on another forum it was very close between Orange w/ and w/o Connectors but it came out as a majority vote for Orange w/o connectors.
Also as per there suggestions I made the front mesh lighter and added a MannCo logo, I'm thinking of swapping the MannCo logo out as it's overused and doesn't fit very well:
Ok switching the logo out with a bunch of different ones, please choose your favirote. Also I found out how to make the textures in the SDK Model Viewer have a higher resolution so it doesn't look as fuzzy now.
Yeah, it's also a reference to the original company that made Engineer's buildables. Just read the TF2 manual on steam.
On another forum there's a majority vote of 24 for the Cent Tree Down Logo while onl 4 for the Casali Logo, 3 for the MannCo Logo and 2 for both the Driller Logo and Carpy Logo.
To be honest while I do agree TF Industries fits the history of the engineer, it does not fit with my theme on carpentry/woodwork. Cent Tree Down does on the otherhand and has a funny pun to go with it.
Not to mention the TF Industries logo even while fitting for the engineer doesn't look as visually appealing as the Cent Tree Down Logo.

Or you could make the Cent tree Down logo look more like the TF industries. But TF industries is also awesome. Both are awesome.

I do not mind that you use the Cent Tree Down.
The only thing I would really dislike that you used was the Mann CO logo.

Whoopsie.
Anyway here's some of the ideas I have for the sentry gun, I will draw up some concept art put he's the ideas for references:
My basic idea for the operation of the sentry will be based on this, click it for link:
The True-Aim Guidance Marker:

use mining light
That's exactly what I was saying.

The orange connectors blend in with the helmet, distracting from the shape, IMO.

I vote for Tf Industries.
Other companies I'd enjoy would be General Industries or Carpy's.
this isn't overblown, stupid or dangerous
it's useful. aka something from tf industries.

How about a dispenser with a wood lathe or something sticking out.
