Thanks for the refs I'll probably invert it switching the small band to yellow and the end to grey as I still want a bright color there to draw attention to the important part where all the hurt comes out
Fragus - I used both - all of the colors except team colors and the green came from Swizzle's texturing pallet he had in his (immensely useful) tutorial, green came from the direct hit texture
Pogo - that's true... might add some sort of pattern on there
Scudz & Khton - care to be more specific? I used light grey to more closely match a mortar (the first pic that khton posted up top is actually the ref I worked off of)
Progress on the radio model - this'll be the backpack and I'll do something with an antennae for the flag
Right now it's not too stylized (probably should've concepted a bit earlier on but too late now ) was mostly working off of refs up to this point, I'll probably ditch them now and exaggerate stuff and bend the shape a bit
The goal so far is to make it battle worn with huge chunks torn out and bullet holes (think Cpt. Miller in Saving Private Ryan trying to use a blown out radio on Omaha) which would explain how the soldier got it in the first place... on his Nazi killing spree he found it lying on the side of a road
Also thinking about making it slightly patched up as if the engineer (or some smarter person) came along and helped the soldier use it - I'll probably draw on that idea for the bugle (haven't decided what to do yet) but it'll also cool if he runs around with the broken radio actually not realizing that its broken lol
megaphone with a radio taped to it?
I can see it now.
the soldier couldn't get the radio to make his voice louder...so he strapped it to something that did...HA!

What are you going to do for bullet holes etc?
I'm making a belt as headwear for the Sniper and I found using a 5 sided cylinder to subtract holes from the belt did wonders and barely increased my poly count.
in Blender that means selecting the object you wish to subtract from, then the object you want to subtract with then pressing w and selecting difference from the menu .
of course you could always use one of the ingame bullet textures that'd fit better and wouldn't use any Polys though you'd have to wrestle with the texture.
Also to replace the bugle use an old wartime mic with the Soldier yelling a battle cry into it
OK scudz I'll look into it Kinda like the light grey though
Krieger + jgoodroad - Megaphone might work - there's still the problem of the bugle sound - not sure if valve would want to make the extra effort for sounds if they choose my pack
What I've got floating around in my head right now is a bugle-radio thing - an old cut up bugle meshed with a radio... maybe a microphone stuck in the bell, wires sticking out of valves, etc
Scrub - working in max subtracts tend to give you weird geometry - extra unnecessary edges and verts everywhere that you later have to clean up
(at least the way I've learned to do it - booleans)
I'm working with edges to create the hole shape and then extruding and scaling it - figured I'd make a mini-tut out of it as it may help someone (sorry for the weird colors lol didn't change them from the max primitive ones)
I'm just using the connect tool to make new edges across the band of metal
cleaning it up a bit and brought the cut face on the band down and welded with the lower faces
Using the connect tool again on the new edges to create an octagon shape
adjust to taste
Take the middle poly and extrude it inwards and also scale
This is the end result - I added a couple more edges to make it a little more rounded and also adjusted it so it wouldn't be so perfect and between the lines on the band
And these are some in game screens of the mortar rocket that I forgot to post yesterday
Anyways I was thinking a little about the flag - I'd like to make the antenna jiggleboned but since the buff banner is split up into 3 models (bugle, backpack, and flag) which might present a problem (flag supposed to be on the antenna staying static while antenna is waving all over the place)
The other thing I'm toying with is ditching the flag altogether - making a simple funnel shaped model that has an animated texture applied to it so that when the buff banner is active, glowing rings come out from the antenna (like those old propaganda posters if you know what I mean) Also would fit in with the glowing rings around buffed players' feet on the original buff banner.
Then it will be almost impossible to locate the Soldier that buffs the enemy team! Make something for it like uhm... The antenna maybe could be down (closed) and when the buff is active it goes up?
Figured I'd put progress shots up - I think the geometry is pretty much done - the dents and scratches you can't see as well in the render but I'll make sure to put lots of highlighting around them to make them more visible on the texture
and here it is paired with the radio - tri count without the funnel stands at 6882
Picking it back up tomorrow will allow me to take a fresh look and tweaking before doing UVs (as well as give you all time to make suggestions *hint hint*)
Well I've never done sounds before and I think the trombone would have serious problems with animations (also a trumpet too - was thinking about that earlier)
I'm gonna mess mostly with the texture to try to get it distinct, also add a bullet hole in the bell of the bugle (seeing as how my radio is full of them and flag will soon have a couple ) to make it more interesting
banner with spec - skinned to the buff banner bones but for some reason my decompilled .qc didn't have jiggle info - I'll leave valve to worry about that
also going through my older models and touching up the textures ex wear on handles
Well... all my images went down because I exceeded my photobucket bandwith
moved the important final images to imageshack but going to need to work out something for the WIP ones - replacing them all one by one is gonna take a while

Still tweaking specular a little

Thoughts?
I want to keep the antenna out all the time because IMO the model is too boring without it
And also there at the bottom is a little sketch of what I've got in my head for the bugle - a battle worn bugle with a broken radio strapped onto it.
and here it is paired with the radio - tri count without the funnel stands at 6882

I'll probably make a backup flag or something if I run out of time and look into it

and currently unwrapping bugle
I'm hard pressed for time though don't know if I'll be able get around to changing it
anyways this is the flag - originally wanted kind of a pennant like this
but would look too unnatural rigid so I've changed it into something more like hte original (support on top)
smack dab in the middle is a unit logo based on the TF2 logo (of course) - 1 M stands for 1st mercenary division or something like that
banner with spec - skinned to the buff banner bones but for some reason my decompilled .qc didn't have jiggle info - I'll leave valve to worry about that
also going through my older models and touching up the textures ex wear on handles
Finishing up the models and having a little fun
updating the first post with these pics but also here they are
Wooh that was a lot of fun! Good luck to you all!
Also will try my hand at a fake update page not tonight probably tomorrow
moved the important final images to imageshack but going to need to work out something for the WIP ones - replacing them all one by one is gonna take a while
EDIT - nightmare over! dropbox saves the day
