i might try to make the black bottle parts more into the greyish area - thats a really good point you got there.
so, today i stood up, googled and overpainted old saw pictures
i don't wanna go too far away from the original design choice, since i'm just not that good at intenting stuff
which blade and which grip would you guys prefer ?
to get at least a little trick on this, i'm thinking about adding a second and third miniblade like on this modified thing:
Moosey_G, not too sure what to make out of your posting
tex_cookiedough, glad you like my progress so far !
roosterMAP, i'm not sure about which handle you talk, if its from the model preview i posted, it's not my creation but the original bonesaw model with 2 additional blades i put in thanks guys, for your opinions on the blades and grips !
i'm still struggling over starting, so in the meanwhile i followed my second melee alternative idea and came up with this.
it's supposed to be a reflex hammer (the ones the doctor hits your beloved knees with). i'm not too sure about the spikes - makes it look too much like a medieval weapon, imo.maybe only use screws version ? but make them bigger so one can see the details better ? cause the tiny version gets lost in the first person view.
originally i wanted the hammerhead to be way bigger but there's oobersli's hammer already there: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73116
That would need new animations, I can't see him using bonsesaw animation for a hammer.
Yeah, I foresee three issues:
1. The Medic swings his bonesaw/ubersaw in a forward thrust while aiming the bottom part to hit the enemy.
2. The Ubersaw thrusts the melee right into the enemy.
3. It would look very strange to see the Medic play cello on this thing.
For the saw #6 looked closest handle-shape-wise. I'll be honest though the saw shapes presented there all kind of bore me, for one because they look too much like regular saws. If they looked more like a chainsaw or a turkey carver or something new and interesting like the ubersaw was then great, but just another regular saw...eh, in that case you might as well go for the mallet.
yeh, that was my point. keep it close to the original saw, but give if that 3 blade-death-poking stuff, i tried to illustrate on the original saw mockup that i posted.
since this saw and reflexhammer desaster went down, i decided to get atleast one item finished before deadline, that is the mcdreamy. so it's 3 unfinished items so far - good rate
unfortunately i don't have that medic mask by Gerre unlocked yet, so don't know if it fits within these measurements:
Even tho I don't really like blood I think the bloody one looks better. It is more original and no hat to this date has blood on it yet. But make the blood look better because this blood does not look good.
I'm currently working in a hospital and often go into theatre and have to wear those caps regularly. What you have at the moment doesn't really look right. If you want I can get you some pictures of a real surgeons cap unwrapped. Funnily enough the people who work in Cardiac wear red caps and everyone else wear one of two shades of blue (light and dark). There are also some novelty ones with a recurring Christmas Tree pattern.
got my hand on the saw in the last 2 days.
i know, nothing spectacular innovative - but that's not the goal
people said they don't like the 3-blade idea - so the general twist is lost anways...
we'll see maybe i get enlightened some time before contest end !
my progress on the reflexhammer, just for the sake of it
i'll submit it anyways - just for the sake of it :P
maybe another class can get it put to use !!!
if you're referencing the clear absence of the saw-similarity, i was already informed about that item not going to work as a saw but felt like finishing it anways
i'll submit it anyways, just for the funs
I'm sure if Valve likes it they'll give it the animations/hand poses of The Pain Train or something.
Lookg great! Have you tried having the entire head on the same smoothing group though? The curve looks kind of awkward where it changes smoothing groups. It could be because you're going for a carved look but if it were carved like that I don't think it'd be so shiny.
nah, didn't try that. i kinda liked a chiseled rubber look from the smoothing group, but i guess the texture doesn't hold up
i think you might be right with adjusting the smoothing groups. will definately try that out tomorrow ! thanks for the suggestion
Zipfinator , you were totally right about the smoothing groups. looks way better with the phong lighting stuff applied, when it's only one smoothing group thanks for that !
k, what about that saw here ?
should get finished or scrapped ? what do you think ?
thanks, hithron, you're the first and only person but me who likes this saw
here's the 4 versions, that i need to choose one from. i'm leaning heavily towards #4
and that means something, coming from an acknowledged doctor
thanks !
with all of them having testcompiled, its safe to say, that #2 is out. 1 and 4 are my favorite. but i also like 3. we'll see what i can achieve in the time
4 and 3 have a bit clipping, but thats valves origins cause. I would enjoy seeing 1 ingame
I'm also from Stuttgart and I didn't know that it can be so creepy oO
Maybe add some blood to the blades?
@Zipfinator:
yeah, about that issue i'm not entirely sure. some said it would be fine to submit multiple items for the same slot as long one has 2 more unique items to balance it out, but to make sure, i emailed valve to find out for sure.
if it's not allowed i'll just choose one of the (hopefully 3) melee weapons and submit the others via the regular contribution page
thanks for your input guys
within all the forums i posted. 4 and 1 got accepted the most, so i'm definately going to make these 2 items. and i reaaaally hope to finish the #3 as well, cause i like its shape a lot - even though it has the same clipping issues as the hammer and the weird rounded shaped blade thingie. i just don't like leaving too many things unfinished
yay, stuttgart ftw
i think the clipping can be reduced quite a bit - since i didn't do a fine adjustment yet. just did a superfast compile to get a feeling for the 4 weapons ingame
on other notes, i finished the uvmap for the #1 saw with the wooden handle. pffffssssssshhhh \o/
The official rules say that you can only submit one of each slot but I've seen Adam saying you can do more than one for a slot if you want. You already have the other 2 items done (Hat and Needle Gun?) so I guess you'll be able to submit 3 melee weapons if you want.
4 looks alot like the default and bonesaw , the first is actually very diff from them both and would work much better , as well as having 2 mats ( wood and metal ) instead of just metal.
You know, you could probably salvage the reflex hammer if you angled it forward a little more, added a short spike on the end, then reversed all the attack animations. Would probably be more effort than its worth, but I like that thing.
Anyway, personally I prefer 1, it's the most visually interesting and different one. 2 would be great due to how different it is, but it just doesn't look very intimidating.
I really like 1, but I guess it doesn't quite fall within your theme. Unless you changed it to workshop/carpentry I guess it wouldn't fit. My second favorite is 4. Nice job though

now onto the drawing board:
DEM TRIANGLES. Also number five.

in my tiny world, there were only idle, draw and swing1,2,3 and it looked fine with these

And for the hat try adding the Medic icon, like the one on the Physicians Procedure Mask and on his sleeve.
Take the square tipped ones for example
I would prefer the same. I like the hat-idea but if he wears the hat like this he will only look a lil bit redicilous.
i'll submit it anyways - just for the sake of it :P
