Rocket launcher works perfectly! Here's why: what did Vikings and other pillaging barbarians do when a city turtled up behind some fortress walls? They DEMOLISHED THE WALLS WITH BIG MACHINES THAT THREW GIANT BOULDERS.
I don't know...The idea has potential, but i'm going to have to make a lot of stuff to find something that is medieval with 50's spytech and cartoon style...sounds like a challenge.
You've got the beginnings of a very cool design there, but that's going to be a tough on to get in the game without not only some new animations but also some specialised scripting.
With the open end like that, the game is going to need to be able to keep track of the number of rockets loaded into the launcher and illustrate that with the ammo in the hopper. It's probably not something that would be particularly complex, but it's code that doesn't already exist with the current weapon, or as far as I can think of, on any other other weapons. I'd suggest it'll be easiest to just enclose the end to avoid this. Maybe you could pop some more viking paraphernalia on there to keep it interesting.
what does it shoot? rockets in a flare-gun arc. Probably... or javelins with a rocket taped-on. *shrug* Doesn't need manual reloading, just has slower rate of fire, hence the magazine at the end.
Yea, they're a bit too back Heavy, 1 seems the best IMO though. Also are the horn and the shield supposed to both be secondaries? Because the contest limits 1 item per slot.

Horn and Shield are the same item.
Horn replaces the Bugle, and the Shield replaces the Backpack.
Together they are the replacement for Buff Banner.
So what is this? Mann co's version of the soldier's rocket launcher with some crossbow and ballista influence and a certain steampunk style. May or may not be haunted. vikings had siege weapons, regardless of what stereotype says, so this is a loooong stretch by taking the ballista/crossbow design, giving it a cartoony remake with excessive Mann co. redesign elements.
I know it doesn't fit the viking theme that well, but i couldn't pass up on the idea after Khthon's suggestion.
Shoots a flaregun arced projectile that can stick to walls/people, dealing medium contact damage and a delayed explosion. picks on hunstman, flaregun, and demoman skillsets a bit.
just to give the model a purpose and to explain what it is.
I want to see the shoot animation for that too. Also, how did you get a perfect full scale soldieron you modeling software. I want to know where you got that, because I dont know where to look.
Although it isn't allowed to put stats up, I'd humbly suggest that since it's a siege machine maybe it can do extra damage to buildings. Might help versus the Engy Update buildings that are coming.
That rocket launcher doesn't make any sense. The drawstrings from the front crossbow will intersect with the second. Ballistas don't have redundant drawstrings like that.

Bullets don't pass through people just because they're the same color as you. Being covered in pee does not make a sword slash hit harder. A compressed jet of air would not deflect a flying rocket.
TF2 is not dictated by logic. It's dictated by what looks cool, and the double drawstrings look badass.

FALSE - those things break the laws of physics to accomplish a gameplay mechanic, not simply because they look cool. There is no gameplay reason for this weapon to clip through itself.

Counterpoint- the demoman's pipe launcher holds four grenades, yet the model has six chambers, because it looks cooler.
you both are right, the demoman held 6 grenaded, but they reduced it to 4 because of gameplay, but they kepped with the 6 bullet chamber for looks and coolness. Now honestly, the wire intersecting is such a minor thing, no player will notice, no player will care, it simply looks cool. Now lets stop raping re.winds thread with bullshit.
shoots something like this. doesn't headshot, <50dmg contact damage, delayed automatic detonation, and yes, does stick to people, walls, and buildings.
Behold: Bolts of explosive potential.
Game-breaking? Don't care, not the point of the competition. Besides... It's cool
edit: sigh. linkified because someone brought to my attention that it's rather phalic. stupid people with dirty minds.

2 rounds and a straight next to each-other will always create such images.
the animation looks weak, make it faster, more powerful!
I agree, I think the problem is that the drawstring doesn't come far enough forwards, it stops half way up the barrel on the forwards movement which doesn't really make sense anyway, the string definatly needs to finish at 90 degrees to the barrel.
massively discouraging to continue working on this is, i am... >_>
borrowed soldier's chest grenade. Don't ask how the grenade still works with a bolt skewering it. er... its haunted.
As much as I love the idea, I do believe the rules state that the entire model have to be made from scratch.
So no usage of Soldier's chest grenades, unless the rules allow you to model a replica.

I think (but don't know for sure) that they might let it slide, as otherwise it would just shoot the normal rocket models anyway.
nope, u can use what was already made in game, (i rememebr a guy emailed robin about that, and robin siad "Sure."
for the actual concept:
i LOVE it.
everything, is awsome, clear film, great idea.
and like many ppl mentioned, the animation need a bit more work, faster, and end up 90 degree to the rockeet it self
and just a little more suggestion, the first two fliping thing should be shorter for better looking, and there should be a gap in it (so the fliping thing is made of two piece of metal) just so the first string can past through, the second flip,
if you dont get what im saying, and you kinda like the idea, (sorry, english is my third language) im happy to explain further and post image
Combining the two strings, while still a bit nonsensical, adds a level of plausibility to this incredibly implausible gun. Now all you have to do is give the string a quicker, more dynamic animation. Remember, it's impossible to fire if the string never goes perpindicular to the stock. Ideally, it should go slightly further than that. Study that youtube crossbow, and emulate it as closely as you can.

In another thread (for this contest) someone had emailed valve about taking a valve-made model and adapting it. They said it was fine. For such a minor detail as the projectiles I'm sure they won't mind, after all if he made his own grenades they wouldn't match the existing grenades the soldier has and would therefore look out of place.

TF2 lack blondes
You can meld a siege machine aesthetic/silhouette with a rocket launcher. A normal tube with some siege machine-y looking bits haphazardly jury-rigged together. References - http://www.siege-engine.com/mistaballista/p6170030.jpg - http://www.mlahanas.de/Greeks/war/CatImages/Ballista.jpg -
And you could give the overall weapon a 'Viking Longboat' look with a dragonhead mouth launching the rockets and even a tiny team-colored sail duct-taped on the launcher. You could have Celtic/Viking scrolling designs (all public domain) along the metal to spice it up.

doing research is your friend.
Originally it did hold six grenades. It was changed to serve the gameplay purpose of reducing demo spam.
Jeez, Jarate on my parade, sourpuss. I still say that as long as it looks cool, a minor physics inconsistency shouldn't matter, but whatever.
Physics >= Cool

Either way it would be a good idea to have a backup model, just in case.
You're gettin' there.

You should try and keep the polycount of the projectiles under or as close to the original rocket's polycount. Lots of rockets cause LOTS of lag.
In other news, new uvmap & texture for headgear. Checker one is a bit old actually...
first pass, again, as i recreated them from scratch.
