Hi, first time poster and first time-ish modeler here.
I'm signing up to this competition to give me some motivation to actually make something as opposed to wasting my time in games all day.
So I'm going to be designing weapons for the Pyro, as I think he/she/it needs some love, and at the moment it looks like my theme is going to be space.
A couple of months ago I started this as my first ever model:
Original SPUF thread describing it here:

I'm hoping that I'll at least finish this as part of the comp as a replacement primary weapon.
As a melee replacement, I'm thinking of making a rocket shaped giant squeaky hammer (filled with an inflammable liquid that discharges and ignites on impact).
As a secondary weapon, I was thinking about making a handheld glass static electricity filled ball that would provide some bullet resistance to the Pyro when held and while moving. In keeping with the theme, it would be in the shape of the Robinson family's Robot's head:
Although this would definitely require different Pyro poses, so it may not be acceptable.
And as a hat, I was thinking of making Poopy Joe's head:

and affixing the Pyro's aspirator to him. But chances are this hat concept is far too difficult for me at the moment.

It's a bit hard to tell where you're going with it at the moment just from the image. It might help both you and others reading if you knock together and post a quick concept sketch of what you're planning.
The other ideas are pretty out there. The mellee weapon that can set an opponent on fire would be a good companion for your concussive gun, but the giant rubber mallet containing flammable liquid is a little bizarre.
A lot of the weapons in TF2 are makeshift and look like they've been comped together from other parts. With that in mind, perhaps it may work better to have a melee weapon that looks like it's been jerry-rigged together from something like an axe handle, fuel canister and zippo lighter. It'd fit the overall feel of the game better than a novelty rubber hammer.
