maxscript Editable_Poly vs PolyMeshObject

When "show end result" is ON maxscript recognizes a mesh as a PolyMeshObject instead of an Editable_Poly, and some commands no longer work, like "$.selectedEdges". Is their a way around this?

Try getting $.baseObject first and check its type?

Well the classOf the base object is EditablePoly, but I don't get how to translate that into forcing the function to recognize the object correctly...Sorry, I'm sort of a maxscript noob.
