okey doke.. I'm seeking crits on my lighting here.. trying to get this thing to pop real nice.. got a 3 point light set up going so far-- Key is directional light, color is pale blue, intensity is .8, Fill light is omni, color is light blue green, intensity set to .25, and rim is omni, pale yellow, and set to intensity of 4.. any detailed suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.. thanks
no to be honest... never even knew about them.. would this cause reflection?.. cause i'm looking into some kind of hack reflection to pull off the metal a bit more
thanks seph.. by ambient light, do you mean tone down the fill light and rim?
and yes, i wanted to make a little chipped slab of ice up there to present the title.. got my inspiration from this pic
EDIT: oh and another thing to add is that these are straight screen grabs.. I'm using a real time shader currently to get the effects I have right now...
may edit again later.. testing enviro maps.. might have questions on how to set this up right..
another update.. i think i have better control over my spek and reflection now.. and i worked on the ice in the corner.. i think it reads better now.. let me know what you think.. thanks
it would be nice to see it under some different lighting conditions and also on a larger image to decide how the spec and stuff is holding up. at first glance, I reckon it looks a bit too much like stone than metal, but it's definitely getting there. also perhaps the grip is a bit too dark right now. fantastic diffuse/detail work.
I know i'm posting a lot today.. but just having a lot of fun w/ this model.. here's a view of the blade from the opposite side.. the lighting might look a little blown out, but I kinda like it, brings out a lot of the shineys, that the softer side presented in my layout sheet doesn't, and you get the contrast undertones of the blue lights behind.. hope ya like
nice really comes alive with those last two shots... the res helps but in the second image the boosted lighting helps alot
think it may be the case that the key light in the older setup is not strong enough, shere betwen the two may strike a nice balance
also the forms work better at non orthographic angles, maybe better to include 1 large 3/4 angle with a couple of smaller sillohette images around
thanks seph.. good to know. i almost like the view of the warm lights over the cool now that i see what ur saying.. ill play with that tomorrow then. perhaps change the layout a little and work with the warms.. or perhaps present a little bit of both
Nice! This has improved a lot since I last saw it a few days ago. I would take the icy gimmick out of the presentation shots though, IMHO the ice stakes detract from the main piece in a bad way and that font isn't doing you any good either.
@ Felipefrango-- I had a buddy tell me he wasn't all too impressed w/ the font either, so i'll look into something that is a bit more readable, and/or perhaps something a bit more fitting and warcrafty...
I dig the new font, glad you ditched the ice stakes too. Now, I think the concrete texture on the background kinda clashes with the sword, they're almost the same brightness and color at places. I'd sugest making it darker and more subtle, and maybe give it a complementary warm color for an extra pop, but I understand it's an ice sword and all and reds and oranges wouldn't wxactly fit. Maybe making it a tad greener would suffice.
Felipe-- are you talking about the sculpt render or all of them?.. i see that the sculpt background texture seems almost identical colors w/ the sculpt itself.. i'll change her up a bit..
It's definitely more evident in the sculpt but I noticed on the first pic as well. It doesn't look bad, mind you, it's more of a personal quirk to be honest, it's just that I don't think the texture should be so evident. You have a badass model and that's what you want people to see. IMHO backgrounds in presentation shots like these should be done to subtly complement the model, they shouldn't even be noticed by the viewer, and I personally felt it interfered with the model, especially since you can see the tiling pattern on the concrete.

looks like everything turned out great.
Beautiful work.
but it needs some strong specularity on the blade!
you could really sell the leather straps and the metal look more though with the spec/gloss maps
a little update.. worked on my spek maps some more

reflection map for sure (environment)
slightly less ambient light
better presentation, is that supposed to be ice up in the corner??
