You're all spoilt little bastards with your 2048 textures and fancy ass
specular so the glorious residents of
#Model_Design challenge you to do something different.
Two textures, a 256x256 and a 128x256, no normal maps, no glow maps, nothing but a diffuse, and for the model, Bobo's classic Bunker.
This was originally a 24 hour challenge, but we understand that so many don't remember how to work so small, so you have a week.
Here's your download, may require some effort on your part to sort out
And some inspiration from Qube, Bobo and DH

Yes this is Kettle, who is this?
This is pot, you're black.
Ground plane, reflection, fancy specular shader... fail.
A real man would have hand painted the reflections, OR mirrored the world so two models would have touched heal to heal, instead of using some fancy nancy boy shader.
Cool challenge tho. =P
how do you know that isn't what Bobo did?
Perhaps becasue YOU are mr. fancypantsshaderman and you can spot fancy specular and raytraced reflection when you see it???

"I'm bringin' bunker baaack"
I started a head tonight
couldnt resist this ref:http://img1.eyefetch.com/p/wd/912321-c8866332-84cd-49f7-b855-57016a757418l.jpg
colored outlines and all.
Slow like snail!
at least i have a week
This is the reason we wanted to do this.
In this day and age, it's all about complex shaders and multiple maps. It's not just about painting anymore.
Yours is coming along great! Keep it up!
I'm probably just going to replace the image here a bunch of
times until I think there's enough change to warrant another
image reply.
HntrLuc: That's fucking great work. I love how happy he is.
willy: Great start, man, especially for your first time doing something like this.
Don't know if I'll do the entire body but I'd like to finish the head. This brings back a lot of memories!

I reuved the entire head. Sorry Bobo, but the uvs weren't to my liking.
Doing some old school toon shading with inversed tris.
I'd love to give this a try when I have some time, maybe this weekend. they all look great so far!
Messed around a bit until I came up with a color scheme and level of detail that I felt was appropriate for the style I'm going for.
Some of these UVs are confusing as balls.

Sennheisers!
this only came up because we were talking about how newer guys here have no idea about working with small maps and with having to put everything in to it, quake guy was a possibility too, but the non-power of 2 texture and a fixed palette would have freaked a lot of people out.
as for a proper challenge, smaller, quick challenges that you can do on your lunch break or while you've got a couple of hours to burn at night are better imo
hehe the web never forgets
would have loved to give this a try but all the free time i get goes to work on my gun and mod stuff
hu what? it is power of 2 o.o
probably easier to texture than bobo's uvs! hahah, jk.
edit: aw, the UVs aren't so bad. Just a lot of seams. They're easy to bitch about. (:
Night or day, lunch or dinner, you could have selected a model with a more attractive UV template if your purpose was to lure newbies into trying it out. This UV really is an enigma.
Just a quicky
slowgress post
so so so long after doing any texture painting.. slowpoke !
BUNKER RE-UV!
The head is now a 256x256 and I moved the back middle pouch onto the main 256x256 sheet for consistency. The head has gained a bit of resolution (you can always paint it at 128 I guess, if you wanna be hardcore), but it's gained a fair bit of ease of use at the same time, I think.
Lemme know how it goes, I'll be using this version for my texture from now on
Texture soon.
Didn't get to work on it yesterday.
Blocked out colors and began working on the top armor.
In any case, just... mentioning that in case anyone else has trouble with that random quad. Furthermore, I felt like showing how cool this starting setup is despite the face still being painful to look at. Was baked from the other uvs.

just right click to select between body/head, switch to 'texture paint' in the lower left. the UV view accepts brush painting but for some reason pressure doesn't work there for me, so it's kind of useless. but you can use Image>Save and Image>Reload to go export/import the map. you can set a psd as a texture in blender, and it works, but if you paint on it and save it just exports a crappy compressed jpg. but pngs work. also! if anyone knows how to disable oversampling in the viewport, that would be great. [/annoying spammer] oh, also you might need to tab in and out of edit mode when switching parts. updates the uv view. %_# but as if anyone needs me to tell them how to operate the alien program that is blender. I feel like an obnoxious 12-year-old posting "tutorials" on youtube enough as it is
Skanker, love the progress so far. Nice and vibrant
Go to user prefs (ctrl-alt-U) -> system, and uncheck "mipmaps"
