Gauss: I get that ALL the time, it's not just me? I think the turning point for me is to just allow myself to be creative. I think I censor myself too much, and that really squelches anything that could potentially just come from the left hemisphere. I've just got to loosen up more often, I allow my thoughts and feelings to stagnate far too much.
and I seem to have a mental block against references for some reason. That could be another reason why I'm stagnating so much.
I liked your version better Makkon, so I had to give it another try. Too bad I can't draw helmets
I have to say Makkon, I've really liked the last couple of pieces you've put up. You're extremely efficient with your marks-- this newest one has a wonderful gestural quality to it, and immediately reads. Awesome work man.
[edit]
also, here's an earlier version of the piece, as well as an alternate route. Fun to look at I think.
@Peris & Sectaurs-- thanks guys @Makkon-- I'll give you my colors if you give me your form mastery
Mask_Salesman > Makkon > wake > ravenslayer > Allan-p > wake
the hair just got me on that one, so I had to give it ANOTHER try. Anyway, I decided to have a go at it using an airbrush and some really soft charcoal brushes as a change of pace. it's different, if anything else. A bit reminiscent of the old Heavy Metal covers actually...
anyway, always glad to be back on board on these. Let me know what you guys think.
Everyone in this thread is so much awesome it's a little intimidating to post something :P But I'll throw what I did up anyway!
SupRore> Allan-p > Mezz
Was I planning to do a cute anime version of this? No. But that's what ended up happening.
P.S. I don't know how to draw guns. And I was too lazy to find reference :P
I have to remember to put up drawings occasionally that leave room for other people to play with, more of my recent tags have been fun to look at but not so much fun to tag.
@Allan-p-- reminds me of your girlfriend too jk, I don't know what girls look like in real life *sigh*
I'm workin on a pieces based on yours Allan-p and cw as well, but in the mean time I haven't posted a ticket in a while. This one was a lot of fun but for some reason I never finished it.
I've been reading here a while. Maybe a few month before I actually got my account. This seems like a good a place to start as any. Heres something from my sketchpad from 2006. Now to find something to work on 8D
Sooooo, I know it's hard to believe but I started with Allan-p's chick in the green tank-top. I was rendering it up nice and purty when I realized my form had pretty bad anatomy...
I swear I'm going to finish it in the original version as well, but in the mean time I added some nasty mirroring and a quick little paint-over to create something I find mildly terrifying.
Wake: Haha got to love that amazonian physique. And I have to say you've improved greatly (going from the start of this thread to the end) Kudos on your determination mate.
Mezz: It's all in good fun, As I'm going through this thread I'm learning new approaches and new shapes to play around with.
Makkon: No worries mate haha he isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Love the new stuff!
I'll see if I can a tag done by tonight. Good work people!
@all of you folks: C'mon help me improve a bit eh, use your powers of cold light of day truth-telling to panel-beat my brain into a better shape for drawing stuff - please I beg of y'all.
I will be on this thread like ants on a lion next week, and I aim to make a massive prolific chunk of stuff and try some different directions and techniques.
On the way if anyone has some little diamond they want to impart, please feel free
cw: my advice:
1) always work from reference
2) NEVER trace or color sample. it always seems like the easy way but you'll never learn--art is about the business of perception, your muscle memory will catch up later. stop using these easy shortcuts and your accuracy will improve rapidly
3) if it sucks SCRAPE IT OUT. do not throw good work after bad--if that head/torso/eye/nose whatever looks crappy, erase it and draw it over.
4) mirror horizontally every few minutes. it's annoying at first but it is an invaluable tool to keeping a fresh eye on your piece, catching what's wrong.
5) the work is not precious, the power is in you; you are free to dole it out. the second you start feeling precious/worry about keeping whatever work you've done on a piece in the face of it not turning out well, you've already lost. Strike out what's there if it is not what you want and rework it. Yes it will take more time but the piece will benefit tenfold from it.
MANSIR it is such a delight to see you back in the new thread if I didn't mention it already.
as for this one, I overdid it as usual but I'm glad I stayed with it. 40 minutes ago it was looking too airbrushy, too much detail in the hair, no grip, none of my typical stylistic hallmarks.
thanks for the tips gauss. flipping and moar references are definitely things I should concentrate on. I am slack on those right now. Time to get doodling. i am on a mission this week.
morning all - having a hard time following through with my plan to bust out tons of stuff - getting too precious, so I decided I will start to change that by just doing more stuff. It should be fun!
I love the proportions of this bloke. didnt change much design wise just tring to rev up my engine, like.

Don't ask me what's going one here, because I have no idea.
Also, on the very slim chance someone's going to call me out on it, yes I know those antennae are MALE moth antennae, not female, but I don't care
I'm going to go not use my hands for a while.
two listen > Mask_Salesman
no idea what shes carrying, broken exhaust pipe maybe?
Makkon > dfacto
Looks like a feline version of the old UT Atomic Cow, like the disney death star too.
Also attached for posterity.

dfacto: Freaking awesome! Saved!

I managed to choose the most awkward head position to draw... T_T

looks like a cardboard cutout atm, I will maybe do another tag and fix that later on.

Allan: I am SO doing a paintover of that soldier!
I love this thread. It just gets the creative juices flowing!
I'm loving this thread, post more people! Or I'll be forced to start double posting haha.
peris > gauss> zackf > fly_soup>Allan-p
It just needed a sort of doom-esque composition with venom Soldiers
And another ticket as I just don't know where to take this guy next:
Paulewog>Mansir
vertrucio > peris
this thread is a good excuse to practice more character drawing

a random one, no very much oomph today.

I started tagging this pages ago and only just got around to finishing it.
I think Gauss will be pleased to know that I didn't colour sample the pepperoni, I picked it straight from the swatches and it worked straight up! :P
It went like this:
kinetichaze > gauss > kinetichaze
Vertrucio > Peris > Makkon > MeDestruit
/shame
Mask_Salesman > Makkon
ticket I guess, don't really like this one but it can be taken a few directions.
it seems quite fun apart from going a bit slow on my big monitor
