Can we please split this thread off? The Lowpoly thread is one of Polycount's jewels, but dv8ix is the best thing since Belias. They're both awesome, but I think the Lowpoly thread is being polluted here.
@DIV post an obj of the monster truck so we can show you what everyone is talking about. Its not a matter of speed. That's in-material. Whether or not you triangulate a model before sending it to a game engine that engine will triangulate the model for you anyways.
I cant do models that have more than 300 polycount before it starts getting slow, becuase my computer has no video memory. Maybe thats why i dont triangulate
You use max right? Select your object and goto properties, uncheck edges only and press okay, now you see triangles!
They are hidden because it makes modelling easier but they are always there, it's how 3d works. Every engine reads triangles and it's best to keep quads because it's easier to process a 50|50 split than odd numbers, which is why ngons are troublesome.
Trollish behaviour or just being stubborn is a handicap to development.
well ... playing devil's advocate here ... and since this is the low-poly thread it's more relevant here than most ...
Ninty DS supports quad-stripping. If you have a decent amount of well-constructed planar quads, and a really good coder who's willing to try and open it up through both export and runtime (for the record : nightmare), you can get some performance and compression gain.
Im just kidding man. and seriously, lets get this thread back on the right track. and by the right track I mean more low poly porn and cylinder penises...
@w1r3d the shading on the chest makes her look manly... or maybe he likes to wear comfortable low rise panties... I mean, not that I would know if they are comfortable or not...
Well explain why adding more polycount helps the video card? It dosnt, My computer can only handle 300 before it lags badly. But NO you want me to add another 100 poly just to triangulate for no reason?? and lag my computer up.
but the videocard interprets polys as triangle anyway.
quad's fully arent magical dude, look at this.
same object from two angles. It's a quad, but looks like its quite clearly made of two tris.
that's how computers understand meshes. why would they make it read and create surfaces on 4+ sided objects when they dont need to? Surely you can understand that a 3 sided object is simpler and thus more efficient than a 4 sided one. 4+ sided objects are just for humans to interact with the shapes more coherantly

but yeah, dv8ix is talking 99.7% bollocks
And the Saturn rendered just quads, but he is using neither

Dude we're just trying to help.
Now for the sake of it, lets imagine that your weird configuration (whatever computer you're running, whatever exotic N-gon engine you're messing with) DOES display a single 5-gon faster than five triangles. Fine. Now consider this. 99.9999999999% of other gameart scenarios don't behave this way, and you're negative attitude doesn't help you learning new pro gameart things. We're not trying to tell yo uwhat to do. Just explaining that the conclusions you came too based on that one example of yours, does not mean its an absolute truth.
It could even be that Wings tristrips ngons fine but cannot built strips out of tris, who knows! Just don't be a douche around here thinking you know everything. Chill out and be more open-minded man. And fix that Truck mesh, it has lot's of areas you can improve regardless of N-gons or not.
And, it matters to these guys, because you posted here!! Simple, man.
It would appear that the combined industry experience of the polycount regulars pales in comparison to over 2 years of experience in game maker gentlemen.
I, too, am missing the wonderful pages of lowpoly goodness than the last few pages of nonsense!
Troll begone!
dv8ix, I am only razzing ya. Dont burn any bridges too early. You can definitely use the generous advice of the resident folks
dv8ix, maybe you should try modeling in a different program.
I used to be make scenes that had tens of thousands of polys in them, with several different textures, in including normal maps on a lapto WAY less powerful than yours that only had integrated video. Maybe your texture resolution is what makes the computer lag so much, you could try saving a version of the texture sized down and see if that helps at all
I'm pretty sure this dv8 guy is the guy that was already banned for making a cylinder/cigarette in wings 3d and trolling everyone about it. His posts and style are exactly the same... Purposely posting shit, and then using that to troll everyone who feedbacks him.
Dv, please respect the other artists posting artwork in this thread and do not post irrelevant 'funny' pictures. Take the time to get used to the mood around here, this thread and the whole forum at the same time. And while you're at it take down that D9 pic.
And, post the tri count of your models if you want to show a number. Again this is not related to your specific engine or computer, it's just that's how we appreciate the density of meshes around here and the possible need for efficient optimization. Like, you know, to provide constructive criticism. If you want it. If you DONT want it, then by all means just do your own thing but no need to spampost a quality thread with one-liners posts, right?
why bother with this guy? he is either a troll or just way way beyond help. He is also the guy that made that really silly tank warfare thread before. http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=65928
EDIT: I change my mind, most obvious troll ever! I suggest a ban. Just look in that old thread that got locked. Also he got banned from conceptart.org for trolling etc.

I tend to agree, especially with the alleged 2 years experience.
select object: edit poly: press 4: open edit polygons tab: press turn... sudently triangles everywhere!

this is wire mesh
Prove it.
I´m sure you will make a developer very happy someday.
like
why would it be done any other way
What do you mean "you people"...

what are you using to make your models?
There... is the problem...
Nah man Im kidding again, but seriously. That is pretty odd. I've never used wings 3d but it still seems pretty absurd.
And the Saturn rendered just quads, but he is using neither
Hahahahaha. That's some proper trolling.

Don't need any of that tri rubbish.
All I need is quads...
You can play quake live fine but more than 300+ tri's slow you down when modeling in wings3d?

Anyways, the Mario is awesome.
