max2010 - docking the ribbon

I'm trying to get used to using the graphite tools and just read a thread where someone said they have them docked at the side of the viewport

I don't like having them across the top but for some reason when I tear the panel off the side dock options are greyed out

Does anyone know how to get around this and have the panel docked at the left of the screen?

In customize user interface you will find "Toggle Modeling Ribbon Orientation". Bind that to a hotkey or toolbar. Kind of silly, should really be docked to the left to begin with.
