ya i don't know about these hardcore scenarios. as far as forums go, this is far from the scum of the earth.
polycount does, however, have the closest relationship between heroes/celebrities and the polygonal pledge class of any forum i've seen. i would suck hobo dick to shake hands with any employee at blizzard, and here i can actually see work they do AND have them maybe give me a few tips.
People at polycount to like help each other and make shit look good..
It site with lot of great more Inspiration & Motivations Works
Beware there is sex and penis all over forum..
Seriously, this place is my access to great artists and feedback, for scripts and discovering new tricks. I'd agree with this place being better than college was for me.
Also seriously, some of the best 3d jokes I've ever seen.
I kinda feel like... it's 15 years ago, and it's my older brother and all his cool friends, and I'm trying to hang around and play too.
A lot of the time, they can be like, "No, you're stupid, don't play with us." But sometimes, sometimes, it's like, "Yeah, alright, come on over, we're playing this really awesome game!!" And I get to 'play' as well
Or something like that Um, but with art. And lolcatz
for me its all about giving weird comments on things,
watching cool art and things full of fuck and of course:
"fix that proportions, nahh im much too lazy, go fix it sucker, NAH! ... "and so on
edit:
i mostly like the technical talk, theres a lot of fun^^
Polycount is where you lurk for years being too scared to post work.
When you think you're good enough to post work on polycount, I think it's an indication that you're at a properly competent and confident level with your work.
took me way too long to turn my attention to polycount. not sure what I was waiting for though....that CGtalk became like it was in '98 again?
At least people at polycount aren't that thread-lock happy
Polycount is where i hang out when i pretend that i know how to model. That being said, i should probably model something, its been well over a year since the last time..
I remember the day when Gwot, Wrath, and Alphawolf were some of the only professionals on here.
Slowly but surely, everyone here got better and better. We all helped each other get jobs.
Now we're all sitting pretty, making dick and fart jokes on irc trying to help others get in as well.
Polycount is great because it started as a forum of people who just wanted to mod Quake. It was never and will never be a pretentious art site that claims to be the end all know all of 3d art.
Before i got in the industry I learned everything I know about game art from Polycount starting around 7-8 years ago. Not going to a game school, I lurked around soaking up info here for a long time. Met some cool people through here and also got my first game job from a post here. Also showed me that sharing info, and helping others is a unique and awesome part of this place, and I try and pay it back when possible.
So ya.. My life would probably be in some other complete direction without this place and I'm still learning new stuff from here, and being inspired by great art.
Polycount used to be a place I could go for learning and technical advice. I learned a whole lot about game modeling from polycount. These days game modeling has branched out considerably into a lot of sub-fields, and finding technical advice on polycount isn't as viable as it once was. Back in the day, you made models for Quake II, Quake III, or Half-Life, because those were some of the only games that supported this kind of hobbyist work. These days, every game and its dog supports some level of modding. Once upon a time, everyone used 3D Studio Max because that was the only program that had the importers and exporters necessary to get your models in game. These days the options abound.
Right now, polycount is more of a casual society for discussing games in general, and posting examples of your work. I've fallen off a bit here, mainly because I have been doing a lot more coding recently. It's a lot harder to pimp the back-end stuff. It would be easier for me to be more involved in Polycount if they branched out the Technical boards a bit more, with sub-sections for specific engines. I would also really like to see some more boards or sticky threads dedicated to tutorials. With how diverse game tech is getting these days, I think more polycount-specific tutorials hosted on these boards would drive more traffic to the site.
I'm a long time lurker, since 'constant costume party'. Don't post too much, but I visit polycount almost everyday. I love talks about games, art posted here, and sick sense of humor
Polycount is the closest I can get to Adam Bromell without actually being inside him. That's right... Penis in bum.
But seriously now. There is no other place like Polycount that I'm aware of and it's the reason why I don't trawl/lurk through other forums/communities because I get everything and more right here.
The knowledge and skill available here is completely overwhelming and what makes that so much better is that people are actually willing to share this wealth of information without charging for it (unless you're Belias, who would probably sell his own mother for a few bucks).
It's the characters that post here, some make us laugh, some make us cry and others just make us want to bash our heads up against a wall to see which will shatter first.
Ultimately, it's a place where I feel like I belong. Home.
