Recently I was talking to my buddy and we were talking about how certain forums and communities feel.
His feel for polyocunt, I quote
"It is like a seedy bar filled with professionals. You walk in and there is a dude smoking a hookah glaring down at you. Several guys at the bar look over with menacing glances. In a corner a group sits by a table with some 'lines' on it. And you are just like where the hell am I. Then someone starts pointing out people and is like, that guy with the hookah is a lead at Bungie and those guys in the corner work at Blizzard."
Makes us kinda sound a little epic, haha. What is Polycount to you guys?
Replies
Sums it up rather well to me.
I still love them for it though
I also use the sketchbook section to help keep track of my overall progress.
isn't it about time to whip that PC Stall back out? that was some of the best community love i've seen in ages :P
there I was tiny, here I am just small. much better.
i don't want to know what that makes md then
I had to quote this ..
somewhere which isn't just all asspats and nonsense; you can get honest feedback and opinions from stand-up folks who love in game art, many of who are professionals!
HEY! There are some girls here........ Ok maybe 1 or 2........ BUT WE DON'T SMELL!
Polycount is also a place where you can help people and be helped. We have a great rounded community of not only artists, but tech artists as well. People like Ryan Clark, Jogshy and Renderhjs, who have created tools so invaluable to this community and our industry as a whole. We can get thoughts and critique from a wide range of people and skillsets, which gives us a larger picture on our own work and how to improve upon it.
In the end, to me at least, Polycount has always been about learning. I know that since I became a member back in like '01, I've grown significantly. There are quite a few Polycounters whom I can thank for that.
Anubis
Paper tigers RAWR!~
psst...that's a lion.
This better?
haha, well, that was my buddies view of polycount. But I do kinda see where he is coming from, lol. It also is a compliment, he said we are professionals...
No but really, it's a cool place because it feels like one of the only remaining forums that isn't flooded with myspace kiddies in an attempt to be "the biggest forum ever!" but also not so stuffy and 'serious' that you aren't allowed to speak frankly. Man, I've watched so many sites go down the shitter once they decided that "WE ARE PROFESSIONALS AND PROFESSIONALS ARE ROBOTS ON THE SERIOUS INTERNET WHERE SERIOUS BUSINESS IS DONE".
Stay surly, polycount.
Class can go fsck itself.
Also, more cats required. Tiger was a good start.
quote for f'n truth. Josh got me my current job. He had a contact at the company I work for when he was doing some work with them and I got in as an intern and now been full time for 1.5 years. Thanks man. I love me some polycounts, the networking alone is invaluable. Combine that with constructive crits, explosions and penis tanks and it's the fucking MacGuyver of CG sites.
The green naked statue
I this place, not sure why. Reminds me of working in a team. Serious learning coupled with stupid perverted jokes and rofl's.
oh and fart jokes.
It's also good because you know that if you post your work you will get the truth, not just the "thats awesome!!111 *dies* faints* *dies again*" shit.
Although I still feel you guys are a little too good for me to start posting WIPs yet.
Polycount is a bit like having a few more brothers. Some are older some are younger all into their own thing and at different stages, but there's a common bond that no matter what they say or do, I'll sit down and have a beer with em and talk about stuff we can agree on.
I also like that "pros" and "hobbyist" blend together into polycounters. I've seen some amazing art from people who aren't in the industry and it doesn't matter, great art is recognized as great art. Sure there is an amount of "oh you work for who!? fap fap fap" but for the most part people are evaluated more on their individual merits rather than their pedigree.
it's also full of awesome people with wallets that say 'bad motherfucker' on them.
I like this!
What he said!
Dude! My wallet actually DOES say that. Me, Sammy J..the other few thousand are just copy cats.
To me, Polycount is that hot, older chick with experience who teaches you a few things about yourself. Game Artisans is more like a girl you would tell your mother about...and I guess CGTalk is the game art community human mattress..everyone's been there.
*edit: this is of course because you're all cheap whores that are easy to take advantage of.
At first you can't take the harsh beatings and you want to cry, but aren't allowed to, and eventually you take every cigarette burn to the heart, and it makes you a better person.
Except with art instead of kinky sex.
or something
...and of course penis...an almost ungodly amount of penis.
