Vig, you should submit those pancakes as a replacement for the Sandvich. Seeing a heavy chuck a plate of pancakes around for people to eat would be awesome!
When I was in Venezuela during winterbreak, one guy during breakfast literally had a tower of pancakes. Probably as large as Vig's pile, but since IRL they are much thinner you can only guess how many pancakes there were.
Willy's got it. Go to C: \Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\YOUR USERNAME\team fortress 2\tf\models\player\items and take a look through the folder(s) in there. Those are all custom hats that, as Willy said, you downloaded. Just looking at the ones in the GCFs, you'll find only the ones that have been announced and people are finding.
So, my friends and I went back to The Dragon Whelp. I optimized it, tweaked the jigglebones, and my friends cleaned up the textures. Sent it in as revision 2. Here's hoping.
Do Valves hats use normal maps? Mooting over whether I should just strip my model down to a low poly mesh with hardened edges and a diffuse texture.
nope they aren't using normal maps. Well in fact, they use a flat normal map in the shader i think, but you don't have to worry about it. Just make it low poly with 1 diffuse texture.

How did you do the jigglebones? Did you follow tutes or just figure it out yourself?

There's nothing prohibiting the use of a normal map, it's just that it is more resource intensive that just a diffuse and also for such a small prop you don't really need one. Normal Maps in Source don't look THAT good anyway, so you could probably invest more polies instead of having a normal map. Polies get handled in Source fairly well anyway.
If you want to get a normal map in, you'll need to get it in VTF format, obviously, and then reference it within the texture VMT.
Does anyone know if we're allowed to use refract maps on hats? A hat I have planned will be about 10x less awesome without one.
I guess it's the same story as with normal maps, I think our best bet is getting someone to e-mail VALVe and ask them whether we can have more than one VTF for a hat.
oh man nice stuff everyone! i may give it a shot also! .. infact is there a polycount steam group? to play some tf2 together? ;o i wouldnt mind twating some polycounters! :>

Progress so far... Gonna take a bit because well... I need to buy a rubber chicken for reference. Anyplace I can think of getting one is on the other side of the city, and I'm bus limited.
Plan skinning it so if they choose, it really wobbles and stuff. If they think it doesn't fit the game, then I will use for own. Probably will need to record some rubber slapping sound as well for them.
what an awesome amount of stylish work of you guys !!! loving each and every piece in here and saved it for reference
since you guys all do so many awesome hats i kinda surrendered to that and decided i shall realize another concept by ethan karnopp instead. the "electriclaserbeamstuff" is just horribly amateurish try at imitating particles with alphaplanetextures. if i submitt this piece, i tell valve to make the particles themselves in order to overcome my inability
I like the Electrogun but I don't think the colors really reflect the TF2 style. The textures do... the hues just seem too desaturated or muted. Great idea and execution though. Maybe just the yellow...

An ornate paper hat to show off the Engineer's master handcrafting!
I'm doing a blueprint one right now.

Then I just messed around with the settings until I got what I want.
What do i need to get started?
A modeling app and Photoshop.
And these.

Finally got mine sorted.
Getting just the right level of shading in that texture (not that you can see it in the shot) was a pain.
arrrgh!

indeed there is http://steamcommunity.com/groups/polycountpublic
and my newest one:
I do believe that's my favorite hat that I've seen so far though, looks awesome
I'm sorry
Don't lie
You're right... I did it out of spite! I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY!

whats teh deadline on this? when i'm done my art test i may whip something up,
No way dude, the fact that its a shitty toupee made me lol.
It's indefinite.
kanye might be cool, but i don't think he'll ever be as cool as 5 popped collars cool.
Just some messing around inbetween working on my real submission stuffs :P

the original concept was made by ethan karnopp:
