Its big, it got demons, its dented. It's a fantasy-axe! Demons are a bit iffy in places and some things I'd like to change in their poses but.. yeah. Its a start I promise the handle will have straps and broken leather!
Love what you've done so far, brilliant design. Only thing that caught my eye was the middle bone structure of his wings (the upper demon), it doesn't flow as well as the other two.
quick modification: they should be demon girls, and they should be scissoring
+1 man to that idea, sorry Snefer!
It IS however, an awesome design already... but....that would propell it to an alltime high.
I think anyone who wielded the demon girl version would be at an unfair advantage in any melee, think of how bamboozled the foes would be, dodging a blow, suddenly staggering, questioning their sanity at the subliminal image planted in their minds from glimpsing the blade as it sliced past their faces.
In that momentary loss of concentration you could strike again easily.....
The new arcing lines in the axe blade area (between the bat wing "fingers") seem to be making it overly noisy. Great sculpting work and very entertaining design -- straddle that axe! Straddle it!
The part where the actual axe blade meets the main body, looks very thin and flimsy. If you would imagine using it in battle, it seems plausible that it would quickly break - what is the usage/story behind the axe? I would imagine that from the ornate design, it is supposed to be ceremonial? Regardless, very awesome design and beautifully sculpted.
Hey Snef, way to be humble with your piece and dubbing it "cliche" because its anything but, as far as I can tell. I really like the design although its a bit busy and thin in some areas. The ornamentation also reaches furthest down the blade, I think maybe you should have some more room for the blade? Just some thoughts.
The "shaft" looks really thin though, although you already mentioned that its not thinner than an actual battle-axe. I just appears so, in comparison with the rest.
Here's the lowpoly. Still gotta do a rebake because Zbrush hates me at home. Need more ram, apperntly. Pfft. Anyways, here is a wippity crappy render of the axe.
It was more badass when handle was staight (more warlike), ur not chopping wood with it. I dont know anything about axes but that comes to mind. keep it up!
TheWinterLord: I though you and everyone else already figured out that this axe isn't straight ;D haha ^^ I switched to a curved handle cause I liked the look more. Also, waraxes have curved handles aswell
Looking good man. Only thing I would suggest are some fine scratches on the edge of the blade and then maybe a sharper crease where it starts to taper.
nrek: yeah, I was planning on adding that in the spec, which I did now, but it doesnt show that well unless its moving, gotta try to boost it some more.
Dippndots: thanks :] Uhm..not sure what you meant with the last part though ^^
lookin nice man im really glad you brought some more color into this from the last image, i think maybe a little more could be done to sort of bring out the forms of the demon in the axe blade itself tho, maybe a little extra dirt between the finger structure? i dunno it looks good, i just feel like i lose the form a bit in the blade
Really like how the light works with the blade man, got some great little detail in there thats coming through nicely, and yuh as you said, it probably reads a lot better in motion as well.
more or less calling this done now. Gonna do a fancy render and post some higpholyshots/texture flats aswell. Fixed a bunch of small issues in the texture, popped the details a bit more in places. :]
Great work on the head, but the shaft could use some polishing up.
Yeaarg, i couldn't resist.
Seriously, came out great, has that sneffer style we've come to love on your character pieces. Clever arrangement of the demons, it's kick arse how the head of the axe doubles as a demon wing!
crazyfingers: first i was like "wtf is he talking about" then I laughed out. Loud. Annoying some co-workers. Getting stuff thrown at me, etc. You owe me for that ^^
JFletcher: Thanks alot man :]
serialkiler: thanks dude
Valandar: not? Missed my mark then I'll make sure the beauty render is more clich
Metalwork looks ace, nice job, the handle grip could do with some loving though, looks unfinished in that area as in I can't tell what the surface is supposed to be, wood? Leather?
Great finish! I still think the axe blade part is too noisy, but that could just be a matter of style preference. The unwrap on this thing must be pretty damn complex given how many odd intersecting shapes you have going on there. I'd be curious to see any of the texture flats, or even just an AO flat to see where you chose to put your seams. Did you paint the textures in zbrush or 3DCoat or something like that?

Looks pretty cool so far. I presume the handle will be bigger?
Ark: thanks :]
I'm a bit surprised I haven't seen anything similar before! Maybe I've missed it, but good thinking regardless.

Im such a nerd.
The message you are sending is ambiguous, which is very good.
This is art!
Dippndots: cheers man :]
ZackF: Yeah, its a bit noisy atm, but I think its much due to the Zbrush shader. If it turns out too noisy in the end I'll just smooth it out :]
marks: Yeah, its kinda thin, but not thinner than an actual battle-axe. Viking axe for example:

As for the design itself, its really stupid. Its meant to be a clich

Looks great though man!
dv8ix: um, yeah, kinda. :P
Two Listen: thanks man :]

butt_sahib: sorry to let you down
anyway, texture update!

Either way, I love the progress of this piece!
Agreed
