You'd be surprised at the number of middle-age people still in the closet because of the stigmas that come with being gay. Also, a lot of the big opposers of homosexuality, are gay. Larry Craig, Bob Allen, Ted Haggard, etc etc, republican leaders that created and pushed anti gay bills and hate.

A white male that has been discriminated against, from what I have seen, has very little recourse. As far as laws go, I'm as liberal as it gets, but as far as words, shit, if I took all the crap that people said to me to heart when i was a kid, I'd have gone and off'd myself.

This is actually true. Of course, the nature of such persecution is different, and also somewhat based on geography. If a straight white male is placed in a predominantly black neighborhood, then it is predictable that he might be discriminated against based on his ethnicity. He is ethnically displaced, and is in the minority given his location. Likewise, a straight male in the middle of San Francisco's more flamboyantly gay districts might find himself discriminated against based on his sexual orientation. (although if he's attractive, he might also find himself getting hit on regularly)
And of course, there's the general resentment that straight white males have to endure for being the majority. They are, by default, "The Man." And nobody really likes "The Man."
Of course, all of this is offset by the fact that a democratic government is controlled by the majority. So despite what persecution straight white males may endure, they are always going to get their way. In theory, blacks, hispanics, or asians could out-breed straight white males. (thus overtaking them as a majority in the population) I'm afraid homosexuals don't really stand a chance, though.

That said, maybe Infinity Ward should take responsibility for the shitty things they say. Maybe they should take a long hard look at how their game is going to reach a very large audience, many of which are under the mandated age of 17, many of which will use the term as a pejorative for homosexuals. Even if they're not doing it for the sake of the people whose feelings they've hurt maybe they should do it for the sake of the games industry not being seen as a bunch of glib antisocial man-boys shouting each other down over Xbox Live. They have a great opportunity to use this game as a platform for tolerance and understanding, and to see them squander it is a damn shame.
