Thanks for the love guys! I am glad you are digging this thread.
Here is a little promo painting I did for the guys at Nimbly Games. It's for their game called Altitude.
I suck at painting so I am open to crits, but I really want to be done with this piece.
I don't think the breasts need to be bigger, they're already large and in charge, but they look flat. Not flat in the sense of flat-chested, but flat in that they need more value and shading underneath in order to make them pop.
i think you just need some stronger value variations for each color... make your current darks darker and your lights lighter but keep the same saturation levels.... yeah boobs are fine and don't need to be larger... i agree with the scarf though which needs some color to thicken it up... i love how you are playing with the outline stroke to add depth to the character... maybe make this a little stronger to bring out the gesture more... thicken up the goggle that is over her right eye... i'd love to pick up some work like this on the side... good stuff man.
Special thanks to the ever gracious and prolific Paul Richards for his insightful crits and totally life saving Paint over.
What do you guys think any better?
i dunno... if anyone knows boobs, Paul does. i would go with the redux looks great man... still, from a personal taste, i would like some stronger value variation, but like i said... personal taste... all these knew elements are super though! the helmet straps, the hand gesture, facial expression, scarf and joystick detail all just add that extra umph. that scarf looks way better fo sho.
Damn, much better, great work Josh, just in general she is more pleasing to look at (the little smirk, the pose of her hands etc.)
I do kinda miss the silver piece from the front though (the left side)... it kinda added a bit of diversity, but maybe it was weighing it to the left too much. Oh welllzz :P
Thanks a lot guys!
DnS: I totally see what you mean about the neck, I'll see what I can do.
Low Odor: Yep, I was looking at it and a piece of me still digs the swooshy boobs. After talking to the client last night, I think they do too.
Kaburan: Thanks!
Firebert: I am glad you dig! But yeah I was going for a more sort of candy flavored color scheme. This is going to be the promo for steam so they wanted it to really pop. I am glad you dig the changes!
Jason: I sort of miss the engine peice too, my main crit from other artist was that it felt too crammed in, like it was being forced into the pic. But after speaking with the client, it may make a return.
Thanks for the Honest Feedback guys. I think the I may have to do one more revision that will be a hybrid of the two.
Lots of amazing work in this thread! Just one tiny crit on the altitude pic: If you don't bring the engine piece back, you'll need to continue the line of rivets just above the gun barrel.
no giant "D" on the buckle? oh well i always thought that element was a bit campy anyways. I like the shinguard that you chose to add alot, simple yet effective. it will be interesting to see what all the rest of his gadgets turn out to be... is that a pocket protector?
love the concept Josh.... but.... BIGGER model screen plz :-)
as far as I can see, it's looking pretty cool! If I had a comment, I'd try to give the eyes another try to match better the concept's shapes. But maybe it's just temp and/or in a "ready to animate" blend shape.
hey josh, she is very cute, but something seems wrong with that smile
it appears pretty staged and somewhat unnatural
i guess its basicly because of the banana shape of the upper lip, if i grab a mirror and try to reproduce that shape with my mouth, i can only do it with closed mouth, once i open it up to let the teeth be seen, the line pretty much straightens.
Basicly the musclemovement for a smile is more sideways then upwards, the form you tried to add only appears from certain angles, but in thios case, looking straight at her, i'd say don't overdo it, it looks like something is pulling her corners of the mout upwards.
I did a quick overpaint, hope it shows what i mean
Love the tan line details in the surfer girl Awesome touch. Will be awesome to see some Hawaiian floral patterns on the board (less contrasty though!)! I think her necklace is a bit high contrast too, could probably tone that down some?

I dig the changes. Crit/comment:
Her long neck kind of freaks me out.
The smile is a million times better.

Nice work man

Really digging that Baron model (the elephant guy). I think that's one of your best ones yet...
Nice Donatello as well. I was just about to start on a turtle myself! Hammer bros from Super Mario :P
Keep posting shots!

Anyways, great style as usual!
This is probably the best rendition of TMNT I have ever seen in my life.
Here is some progress on Surfer girl:
Hugely inspirational, this.

I think the whites of her eyes are too white atm. Knock them back a bit so that the highlights pop more.
Awesome work!
It's really great to see what people post being used.
love the surfer girl's hips. goddamn!
great stuff!
+1 awsomeness points for doing the mouth/facial thingy variation, really cool final presentation.
Donatello is coming on great as well but I'd love to see some thicker thighs on him for extra butt kicking power!
