Heyo.
This year I'm teaming up with friends Kelvin Tan and Jay Hwang.
For this challenge, we're going to depict some sort of ancient civilization (trying to stray away from Mayan) being simultaneously invaded, destroyed, and built over by a technologically advanced race from OUTER SPACE! and/or ANOTHER DIMENSION!
excuse teh shitty sketch. I'll work on it tomorrow and gather more reference.
more info to follow soon.

We were thinking about showcasing some cool vehicles that will be scouting the decimated area in the aftermath.
Here is a rough sketch idea of what one of the vehicles could look like.
One of the concerns that I have with this vehicle is that it may portray a character too much. I am thinking about changing the feet up to make it less character like.
will you guys be handpainting the textures? because if so i might start drooling occasionally
Thanks divi, we are definitely going the route of hand painted textures for this challenge . We have a slight change to our idea and a whole new composition in the works. We should be posting an update fairly soon.
Yup you're absolutely right Peris. I posted the picture in the rules thread to see if it is okay and they said that it looks like a vehicle to them. They want me to emphasize that it has a cockpit and everything should be good. None of the vehicles are going to be the main focus of our piece. They will be in the midground and background. What exactly they will be doing is still being fleshed out though.
New story: all the knowledge amassed by humanity is destroyed when invaders destroy the last city of man and with it the library that contained all remaining human knowledge. With the books gone, there is nothing left to remember humankind.
Thanks a bunch. This was my first time drawing mechs seriously so it was good fun and practice.
Here is a concept of the book of knowledge. This will be lying on one of the tables in the foreground. It has a real fantasy style that we really want to portray versus the sci-fi madness that will be going on in the background.
do you wanna paint my concepts too? xD
Divi - Thanks Divi, I'm afraid I only have enough time to do concepts for one team sorry
Crazyfingers - Thank you, ya I was thinking about how both styles will mesh together. Don't worry we'll make it work
Thanks, ya that is the route we are planning to go with.
Here is a concept of a bookshelf we will be using throughout the scene.
We might be shifting our idea and composition again as well. We will post our new concept once we finalize it.
We should be starting our 3d this week coming up as well.
Crazyfingers - Thanks Crazyfingers, that is actually a pretty good solution to the problem of tiling. I'm not sure if they will be side by side at all but it will be fun to test that out, thanks for the input.
Premise is that after many millions of years Earth has become way too polluted and the atmosphere is nearly unlivable. So to remedy this, a group of Druid-like beings invade earth and plant mysterious seeds that sprout out monstrous plants that take over and "cleanse" the Earth of all the machinery and evidence of human life, thus allowing evolution to restart our human race millennia after millennia. One big vicious cycle
I drew up a rough concept for the idea. The style will be changed to accommodate the hand-painted style. Also will probably push in the background a bit for some more sweet details. Another change we thought would be cool instead of the dome structure was a giant tree in the far distance as the root of all evil.
Any thoughts welcome thanks!
It has been awhile since we've made a post. Zero did a rough painting over a 3d blockout. This is what our new composition will be. I feel that this one will be a lot more achievable to create than the previous with the time frame given.
This paintover is missing a lot of details that we plan on having, but this is just for a general idea.
We started working in 3d earlier last week as well. We will have a lot of stuff to show really soon.
The black/white sketch is a better representation of what you should be aiming for. If the concept/painting you do over the block out geometry is not at least as good at communicating the idea of what you're going to achieve as the black/white concept sketch... it's a good idea to discard it and either try again, or move on to roughing in more 3d/lights.
what this does tell you though is that the composition/scale/spacing of the elements and the camera of the 3d block out shot are all dramatically different than your concept line drawing above... and should be re-evaluated against the original image.
Interesting idea, looking forward to seeing more stuffs.
Cheers!
Here is a progress update of the scene in ut3. The rest of the scene is blocked out in max, will add those when the time comes.
Things to note -
-The sky is a placeholder
-Lighting is temporary
-More details will be added to the foreground as well
The bulbs are interesting enough to be distracting... i'd keep an eye on them as you approach final render, you may want to push them back. looks great though
"tell him to finish it right now!"
Nice work!
nfrrtycmplx - Thanks for the critique. The hotness of those lanterns was something that was worrying me as well. I will make sure to keep that in mind when the whole scene is setup. If they are stealing all of the attention still then I will make sure to tone those down.
I am working on the building right now. Will be going with a different look than the paintover. Will post progress when I have something to show.
If you saw my thread I am staying faithful to the no normal maps, when it comes to painting something that can fit inside a game. You are coming a long way from your other work. Keep working hard!
Thanks Mazvix. Most of the meshes in the progress shot has normal maps. I prefer painting on meshes without normal maps because I feel like I have better control, but normal maps help a lot with other things.
Thanks for the support
I'm sure you'll be in the top few contenders on here. What you have so far is looking great. I'll definitely be checking back often.
That is some of the best texturing, coloring and lighting I've seen in a long time. Incredible work.
I love the style you're using.
Here is another progress update.
The top of the building is really bare at the moment. We are going to have some sort of billboard wrapped in vines and other plants to fill it up.
There is a glass material on the windows but most of them are all broken so it is really hard to see them. Might have to tweak with the material more.
Sky is still temporary as well.
