definitely this one, i think the second shot should give you a better idea of what the whole scene looks like in 3d and this does that. Just needs some more stuff on the left .
I just asked like 10 people on MSN to choose, and it was pretty well 90% of them saying to go with this one, but to include more interest in it - which is the plan.
yeah second shot is good as in different enough, but definitely add more shit in there to make it feel less empty and draw some composition, but overall, yeah better than having twice the same, lol.
I kinda like that shot back a few pages wher you had the drones flying in the sky, was just cool looking, add a few extra effect and I guess it's a nice third shot or whatever
I don't want it look like I'm trying for force my direction on your project so I'll explain it and leave it at that. Take it or leave it, its my 2 bits. Feel free to remove this post if its a kill joy, I won't be offended, just trying to help.
I'm not sure you understand the shot I was trying to portray and I think you're poling was a bit flawed pitting one shot against the other. I wasn't suggesting use that shot exactly, even though it was pretty awesome, but it was too similar.
Now obviously since I don't have the scene I can't take the exact shot but I was suggesting something like this:
Move the camera up behind that rock or there about. Using a sliver of the drop pod to frame the right of the shot (so you're not disconnected).
Angle it toward shanty town so you're looking at something very new, not the drop pod... again.
You unify the shots, you get something new (and you cover up that big blank hill).
I also think people got knocked last year for changing their focal point in each shot? It seems like those that scored the highest kept the focal point object as roughly the focal point in both shots just different angles. They had enough familiar objects from one shot to the other but the composition was different enough that it really sold the shots.
Honestly I think it would be a smart move to do same focal point from a different angle, instead of different focal points. But I think it might be too late for that, the scene doesn't seem to support more than one angle on the focal point object?
vahl - haha right on. And yes of course the 2nd shot needs more 'stuff'.
Mark - thanks for the shot I totally get what you mean. If I have time, I will try it out after I try and finish the 2nd shot we're currently happy with. If, once I do your idea, we like it more than the other one we'll go with your idea.
Here's the 2 beauty shots, complete and to specifications of the submission process (1100px wide). I'll post the spec sheets some time this weekend.
Thank you everyone for your help, support, comments and overall badassery during this competition. It meant a lot to Carlo and I having this sort of support as the last 7 weeks or so have been hectic, to say the least.
Holy hell man, this really came a long way. The smoke trail on the dropships, the whole scene looks really full and complete. Great work. Normally I like to leave some kind of constructive critisism for everyone, but I haven't found anything to comment on yet lol. I'll keep lookin
Have you checked these images on a few monitors / sources? I may need to recalibrate my screens if it's me, but in your first shot, the overpass and I beam are nearly black.
Following you guys from the beginning and I just want to say a big "BRAVO !"
Gorgeous work, your final submission looks fantastic
I put your shots directly in my inspiration folder ^^
Good luck for judging guys, hope a top place for you !
Congrats !
Stunning work, guys! I haven't been able to view dropbox images for the last few weeks so I've missed pretty much the comings and goings of this entire thread (which is a shame). But I'm glad they are finally working and I got to see the entire thread in one massive hit.
Best of luck with the judging and I've got me a tonne of images for the inspiration folder
Solid work, gents.
Nice job guys, congrats on a strong finish. I haven't been a very supportive PCer during this contest, but I've been watching the thread and it's been a pleasue watching it progress. I have a feeling PC's gonna whoop some ass this year yet again.
Hey guys, thank you SO much for the kind words. It means a lot to me to read them, especially after the crazy time i had while working on this.
To put my UC 2009 experience in to context I had...
...fought the flu twice. In bed sick for a total of 6 days.
...worked over-time every Tuesday & Thursday
...maintained Polycount's new site's development with our contractor.
...finished my duties at work for Chaos Rising
...created the entire environment for our entry, not including concepts, on my own.
Needless to say, I am -extremely- happy it is over and done with.
So thank you again for the comments, help, suggestions, ribbings and overall conversation you guys gave me. It made the experience an awesome one!

How did you go about getting your triangle count in the scene?
-Arman
pliang - I'm not sure yet.
Love the model / prop shot. Great package.
-Tyler
gamedev - Sure have. The darkest I saw it was on my Cintiq, but to calibrate the image for all monitors would be an f'ing nightmare.

Congrats !
I'm glad that u have unified that pillar lighting with the rest of ambient color
Now it looks way better that with that blue lamp.
Image reads nice

Solid work, gents.
Its definitely easy to get burnt out on a piece but all that refinement has payed off.
Congratulations.
If it was big enough I'd desktop it.
