i've got a question. Raven is part of Activision correct? so does that mean that you will have little chance to get a job from any other Activision studio?
And if the answer to that question is -No then why wouldn't they just help you to move to another studio?
anyways, best of luck Jesse - and all those that got the shaft.

that's def one one route. the recruiter at raven also recruits for the Santa Monica branch.
They said they will help with trying to get us in to other places but I have little hopes with any help from the management and hr at Raven. I have been busy trying to play catchup with all the pms, emails, phone calls, texts, ims, etc and have started working on updating my folio to send on out.
Chrizz... yeah i tried that but i was pushed even faster. Even offered up my red stapler and to move my desk to server room b. No such luck though.
This really sucks to hear, a lot of talented people at Raven (a lot from polycount) so it sucks even more, but as everyone said Jesse, you are a talented artist and you'll get into something bigger and better in no time.
damn jesse. sorry to hear that man. best of luck. i don't know you at all....but we have people in common.....i used to work w/joe berger.
and i know markus peeknasty at raven. i've actually heard your name every now and then(good stuff). so hell man, go out....have some frosty margs for a bit and relax. this shit will turn around at some point.
man....we just got rid of a third of our staff....and we are a small indy company. s'tough out there.
mate!, sucks to hear bout this - hope the family and yourself get an epic redundacy package - honestly though, I can't see you being in trouble for long with your level of art and skillset.....
Wow, sorry to see you go out like that. Raven's like the 5th company thats made the news this week with layoffs. On the bright side, you did get laid off off at a time when a lot of good games are set to release, so you'll have no shortage of entertainment.
Thanks guys. Hung out with a buddy tonight and drank lots of beers. Still positive. I've been to war and back (literally) so to me this is no big deal. Looking forward to the future and the awesome-ness to come.
Now for my last night of drinking. Back to the beers.
I'm sorry to hear about the layoff Jeese. Stay strong and remember "Talent leads to many types of treasures" Someone will see your talent and hopefully hire you. I will wish good things for you and cross my fingers.
Thanks again guys. I'm currently working on some new things. Rendering out my folio and going to update my site soon. Hopefully lead to some new stuff to pimp.
I hear ya. It's crazy. A couple of years ago prospects were bright with a lot of the local studios, but I was happy where I was and had no plans of leaving. Now things are tough. After I got laid off I started sending out applications back in June. I've done probably half a dozen interviews and art test, but so far nothing has worked out. I've been using this time to learn other programs and update my portfolio. It seems like work was always crunch time, feels nice to have some time for personal projects.
Oh I know 30 days is nothing and it has been super nice to pick up some personal work and revamp my personal folio.
Taking this time to update my site, watch me some tutorial dvds, try new things and just improve myself overall. It's actually really nice to not have to be up at a certain time to go to work and worry about crunch and just work at my pace for a change and do the things I like to do in my style.
So i'm not complaining at all cause I know there are others out there in much worse situations.
In a lot of ways I think it's turned out to be a good thing for me. I've had time to focus on things that I always considered weaknesses. In a production environment it's hard to focus on those things with tight deadlines and milestones. I feel like I've improved a lot over the last four months because of that.
I've got a baby's momma (we get along as well as 2 parents with low incomes living at their respective homes can, but yes persueing this and having no money to contribute to daycare hurts), a kid (coming up on 9 months now, he's amazing), and a girlfriend. When i'm not workin' on the folio, doing HW or fartin' around on the internet I'm constanly reminded of how little time i spend with them. I've also been living at home for over 2 years now with no income, which is REALLY getting fucking hard. Luckily I've got some great friends who are kind enough to take me out now and then insisting that i can "get them back later".
Almost graduated though, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, it's just really dim because the economy is shit right now. I Generally try not to complain, but i put up with enough of that "my hair is falling out" bitching that i figured i earned a ticket on the vent express .
Edit:
All that said, life is still pretty good, i mean shit I may not be getting paid, but i'm not getting paid to do some pretty cool stuff. And hey, just look at those fucking squirrels.

i bet you're gonna get a great job, so cool to hear you're ready to tackle newer and better things right away.
plus jesse is the best name ever and people look favorably upon people named that.
Just a plus
Stay strong!

hope you land on your feet buddy, cant wait for you to update your portfolio!
And as one chapter in your story of employment ends, a new chapter begins in mine. The universe balances itself out.
Now for my last night of drinking. Back to the beers.
does that mean you'll be trolling the forums ?
hopefully your wife isn't one of those people...
Nah with 2 kids I feel pretty safe to say I'm good to go lol.
John
I love you too Cory.
Best of luck in the job-hunt.
Unearthly is coming though so I have plenty of time for that bad boy. Should be fun this year.
Hang in there man.

Gotta love those Gnomon DVDs.
I've been out of work Since May 27th. I'm scraping by.
For those that do, does it put pressure on the relationship?
For those that don't, what do you do to survive between?
