While I work I listen to heavy metal (i'm a metaller at heart) but the music can be too 'energetic' and if I just want to chill and read a lengthy article etc I stick the oblivion game soundtrack on - one of the best ambient kinda soundtracks i've found.
Others I really like are the baldur's gate and neverwinter night soundtracks but i'm just wondering if anyone has any other recommendations I could check out?
Replies
LOTR
Gladiator
Conan the Barbarian
Pirates of the Caribbean
GATTACA
The Insider
Last of the Mohicans
anything by Ennio Morricone
Damn, stole mine! Well anything Clint Mansell is attached to an Aronfsky film... I can't recommend or not recommend "Doom: The Movie" sound track. But yeah Moon was cool, but I think his pinacle was with the Fountain, just perfect, every single song.
Another one would be from the Flaming Lips "movie" Christmas on Mars. The soundtrack is like a throw back to stuff like wizard of Oz, but with a sci-fi, possibly final fantasy, twist. It was pretty amazing too.
gears of war OST
Bioshock
Dark Knight/Batman Begins
Saw (only instrumental, not the nu metal stuff they shoved on afterwards..)

Games;
EVE Online (chilled out electronic, very good - there's about 4 hours of it, too)
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (fantastic original music and some good liscenced metal and industrial tracks thrown in)
Films;
Fight Club (electronicy stuff, some ambient some more intense)
Pi
Reqiuem for a Dream (more electronicy/orchestral stuff - both by Clint Mansell)
Equilibrium (mostly ambient orchestral stuff)
Pretty much anything by Hans Zimmer
Other great ambient stuff;
Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts 1-4 ($5 download off their site, good stuff)
Bohren and Der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission
Bohren and Der Club of Gore - Black Earth (both of them dark, ambient stuff - ex-metal band turned "doom jazz" - I'd recommend it)
If John Murphy is so great why did they use a Clint Mansell song for the trailer?
Edit: Adding more constructive stuff.
Talon suggested Ambience, so I'll add in Lustmord, it's soundtrack evil stuff, very awesome, hes on myspace with some samples.

Also, The Watchmen movie had a really unique soundtrack, its a collection of songs you really wouldnt think fits the genre but it does in a distorted and strange way.
Also, (laugh it up :P ) World of Goo's soundtrack is awesome, especially considering it was composed by one guy (one of two who worked on the game) - one of the best indy games ever.

As awful as the film was, the soundtrack Danny Elfman composed for Marky Mark's Planet of Ape Love was pretty damn good.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rQjksu45wU[/ame]
And wrapping it up with a bit of uplifting world music, here's the theme to Civilization IV.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmut6FBx4xk[/ame]
Oh and ghouls and ghosts!
Nice! Some of my favourites there. Solo Piano by Philip Glass is also pretty good...

Any time i hear on the news that someone chopped someone else up and sauteed part of their brain, i always wonder if they they saw that movie and took it a little too literally.
