Hey Everyone,
I'm teaching a 9 week online course at CGTalk.com entitled, Modern Game Character Creation. Anyhow, the assignment for the class is to have the students re-envision a retro video game character using today's tools and techniques.
While making the videos and course material, I'm working on my own re-envisioned retro character to go along..
Here's a shot at a stage right before creating the 'in game' geo for map bakes...
Sorry, BIG image...

Post up that lowpoly when you get it finished. Sick stuff man.
I really like what you did with the eyes. Nice touch
Thought the same thing lol
Epic modeling mate!
But why did you have to make him such a "good kisser"?
Can I ask you how you handled that one nice indented curve running on the main surface of the helmet? I cannot tell wether it is sculpted in with lazystroke, or modelled in poys.
He's MEGA!
Nice work dude, and great details!
... When some poor guy who wants to learn how to do some 3d stuff takes a look at this they're getting depressed. I mean, seriously - that's cruel.

Are you just doing a bust or are you going for the full body?
but i mean COME ON. he doesnt look ANYTHING LIKE MEGAMAN omg wtf.
Are you plannin giving him more realistic proportions? Or keeping to the goofy game features?
Just a bust for now.. hopefully as the class gets repeated (they're going to run it again right after once this one is over), I'll have time to flesh out the rest of him.. at least down to the waist. I want to do that arm cannon!
Jumped ahead a bit, and am monkeying around with an eye shader... nice little emissive with a secondary color to run along the geo borders..
konstruct, DKK, Firebert, LoJack, Luke, conte, killingpeople, Slum, Blazier, t4pan, wester, bounchfx - thanks guys! I'll keep you posted...
kessler, Thaur, whats_true, Thegodzero, P442, Art-Machine, Indecom, carlo_c - Yup, he's black! Part of the assignment for the class is to put your own twist on these chars. I made this decision because I thought the skin tones (dark browns and oranges) would compliment the blues of his outfit. I also wanted to make him a bit older.. maybe in his 30's.. just a personal preference. He IS Mega MAN after all, not Mega BOY :P
Xenobond - I saw some pics with, some pics without. Most pics seemed to be without, so I went without. Thought he may look too much like Dig Dug with a visor.
wester - Thanks man - we'll see what i end up having time for!
SHEP - I hear ya. I'm leaving the detailing of that for the end when I have the maps, so the class can see how to detail their characters with overlays. Should be a nice looking meshy material.
pior - I'm trying to dig up an old screen of the wireframe for that area. The large seam was modeled in Max. Later on, I decided I wanted the smaller one in the back as well, but the base geo I had for the dome wouldn't support what I wanted. So, I sent it over to Z and did the smaller seam there. So to answer your question, a little of both! I'll try and find that wireframe...
moose - LOL! I got a kick out of seeing all the cosplay folks dressed as Megaman when I was researching. Hadn't run across that pic though.. he's shiny! He's going to have realistic proportions with a hint of heroic proportions in there. Nothing too goofy!
Thanks all, I hope I didn't miss anyone.
Looks like a great take on Megaman to me. The modeling is damned good so far, too.
Ok definetly feels like vendisel headbutted megaman and this came out. But I love the details of the modeling
I dont like the chin guard as it feels to much as though a football helmet versus head armor
Are you planning on making a full body to this? I remember this was for a class you were teaching?
I definetly would like to see the robotic eyes rotate similar to the ones in the X series game opening for command mission, which it seems you have something planned out/in the works for that.
overall I dig it
But I think he's too strong jawed. I'd like to see a next gen mega man that is more boyish and childlike.
And visor. Totally needs a visor.
still, its badass
I share.
In the Japanese animation or game, Rockman is a 10yo child.
Then good modeling technic,etc... but I'm not a fan

very inspirational work and nice complete 360 degree take on Rockman.
If we are gonna get technical ...im a big megaman/rockman fan
if we will say based on age , this is a better attempt at megaman X/rockman X versus normal megaman/rockman
megaman/rockman is suppose to be a child age 10-12
rockman is obviously more young adult, with a few tweaks to this dudes helmet he will fit the X series majorly..
.........It would be neat to see a resdesign of more adult robot masters as well......kinda like transformers redesigns but not as jaggedy
Awesome work though, this would definitely open my mind to cool new character ideas .
i guess his skull is a bit narrow.
I dig it, and I also hate child hero characters. So win win from me.

bitchin take on megaman, although I'm more of a fan of the cutesy style of the original myself, I can still appreciate the bitchin qualities of this one. the helmet definitely needs a visor and I think it needs to extend off the forehead a bit more.
it'd be awesome to see the whole character, but I guess we'll have to settle for what you have time for

I beg to differ. Either the final stage music or Bubble Man has the best music.
EDIT:
Hope that didn't sound like a flame.

though most of the music is awesome
Anyways, this Next Gen Megaman is looking mighty fine, and I'm looking forward to your next update, ancient-pig.
I'll take all your crits into consideration. I believe a lot of them can be implemented on the finished low poly, a little easier than on the high poly. I appreciate all of the feedback..
Nothing too exciting over here. Have been spending most of my spare time fleshing out the last weeks worth of lessons' videos and notes. However, made a quick normals test on my low poly face. I'm going to combine the chin strap and face geo in the end, but I think this face topo should work.
I just slapped the normal map in the specular channel as well, just to get a quick reading...
btw, my vote goes for Woodman..
that was kinda racist huh
