I would love to some stylish animation with these characters. Maybe some skippy animation a bit like in Silent hill's. You could also try making the outline effect flicker on/off, (with some kind of texture swap e.g. 1 version of texture with outlines and 1 without and make that swap I think it would be awesome.
Sorry im pitching ideas but this work is greatly inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing, the vulture guy is my fav, so Cool!!

I put together a little image showing the basic workflow, but there's really no magic.
Just put the image on a plane, make your basic cuts to get the general shape and start cutting more refined into it till it matches the texture. This method is really all about the texture, the model just has to have a silhuette that roughly matches. I haven't cared about edgeflow at all since I won't be skinning it, but I should probably start considering it if I want to go further with it, also in regards to lighting.

Here's a shot of the hand but it's pretty messy. I originally intended the hands to be paper flat but I didn't like the look of it, so I just made some quick cuts to add some volume.

Yes, there's definately possibility for some really cool stop motion'ish animation with this style. We might be bringing an animator into the project as well, so hopefully something good will turn up. Your idea with the flickering is interesting and we'll keep it in mind if it turns out to be handy.
I'm a bit busy at the moment, but hopefully I can get futher along with the undertaker soon enough.
thanks for keeping us updated with new imagery, esp. with the procedures.. my fav. thread on polycount so far. really liking where youre going with this project.. cant wait to see more..
GOD DAMN I am jealous that I didn't come up with this style myself :P
saved to the inspiration folder! Keep us updated, I can't wait to see what the end product will look like!
I was curious, what procedure did you use to switch out the different mouths if they are all different images on a plane? You're giving me ideas man, and that bugs me if only because my plate is so full right now!
Very cool, reminds me of hewlett; but Im still fuzzy on how this works in a rotation. it looks like your just using cards with alphas for front and back, so i guess the modeling just wraps the left and right angles?

I have one big texture with all the different mouth textures. I just made different planes for every shape although I probably could have made some kind of animation of the UVs. Right now I'm just keying the visibility of the different planes, but I imagine I would make an attribute in the head controller to change between them if it's going to be animated properly.

In the first post I have link to a turnaround on Vimeo. For some reason Vimeo insists that it's displayed very large though, so it's hard to see it all. I recommend you download the file with the link provided on the Vimeo page, as it's much better quality.
But you're right, I do basically just wrap the front and rear planes around to cover up the center. It's quite visible in the hip area of the video as it's a slighty outdated version of the model. I don't mind those holes to much though, they kind of fit the style.

Thanks man, I'm really big fan of Salad Fingers. Guess this could be a style to make a more souped up version of those cartoons, if anybody would ever want that.

I'm afraid not, but I think I was mainly inspired by drawing that have that kind of "inky" feel to them like those of the artists that has already been mentioned in here. The music has been a very significiant inspiration as well, but of course in a different way.
I've finished the undertaker and made a little scene for a turnaround. I think I'll have to revisit the ground texture though since that isn't really working. I have a picture for you right now and will return with a turnaround when it's done.
On a different notice the project might have taken a different path. We're due to make our bachelor project this fall and we've decided to try out something along these lines (if we get permission, that is). We've come up with a story and would love to see how this style could evolve if given more time. That makes it less likely that we'll get to do the music video though, so this stuff is more to be considered as research and development.

Haha, easy now. Don't go overzealous on me.

While I am familiar with Modest Mouse I hadn't heard that song before. I definately hear what you're saying about the similarity. Cool stuff.

Mange tak! I've already made one Tom Waits inspired character before this, one that was somewhat similar to the undertaker, so I think I'll better stop already...
Oh, and seeing this on frontpage definately made my day! Yippee!
