- sparsley populated with only 4 million people in the entire country, so less zombies

If you have access to, or could steal an armored truck, I think you'd be in pretty good shape. Weld a snow plow to the front, get your supplies and womens in that back and run down some zombie ass.
Also why does no one think about bicycles! Light weight, faster than people can run, makes very little noise, maneuverable over most terrain, low maintenance and easy to bail off of. It's your most reasonable zombie escape vehicle. Hell if you've got back pegs, someone can shoot while you drive.
