Maya 8.5 crashes

Hey guys, I'm pulling my hair out over this. I'm currently working on this project: http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=61101 and I am up to the final stages, I have two more parts to texture.

However maya won't stop crashing on me! It keeps throwing memory exceptions at me, and I can't seem to stop it. It only started happening today, so I figured that my scene was getting too complex, however scaling down textures and optimizing the scene hasn't done anything to help yet.

I really wanted to finish this project this week, and I am so close.. However this error has totally ruined everything.

I'm sure my situation is incredibly common and a simple fix is nowhere insight, but if any of you guys have had a similar predicament and can give me any advice to stop these random crashes, it would be very much appreciated.

/edit, a bit more experimenting, and it turns out that my whole scene can be rendered using maya's high quality renderer, with the exception of the last peice I UV mapped.. I have no idea why this peice is having so much trouble.. Any thoughts?
