The way I think about MMOs is that they are all pretty much the same game under the hood with a different coat of paint. Sure you can slap a different universe on top but you'll still have the same bunch of people running around chatting, playing dress-up and generally breaking the believability of that world.
The things we love about our favourite fictional worlds are the characters and the writing and I believe that it is impossible to capture the essence of these in an MMO where most of the characters are basically gamers acting out fantasy roles.
that is true about alot of the current mmo's but doesnt necessarily have to be true about the ones made in the future. Imagine a syndicate wars mmo - how would that be different?
well for a start it could be isometric 3D
it could involve making syndicates of 4 people with you and your friends
it could involve vast numbers of npcs which just wonder around town and get caught in the crossfire or persuaded with the persuadertron
it could offer missions all over the world in completely destructatble cities
obviously this would have to be done in a clever way eg the way guild wars has cities as lobbys and missions are filled with npcs etc
These two would be sheer massive hits and probably would gain more masses than most and would more than likely revenue themselves up there with WoW & Everquest.
GTA may be a bit less if in comparison as STALKER stand with a wide range of mechanics and RPG elements, while GTA is a quick jump in a do the dirty work.
Don't know if this has been said before, but I'd love a zombie mmo.
Dead rising's levelling system and insane amounts of weapons + Left 4 deads action + resident evil's zombie crocodiles / mmo = WIN!
I can already imagine some jobs/classes, would be awesome if it was kept realistic and simple:
Medic: Good at healing(duh), could give some buffs(MORPHINE!!!).
Technician: Can modify normal houshold tools into weapons for ultimate zombie slaying pleasure.
Scout: Can open and lock certain doors/security systems, can access maps and blueprints of certain areas.
Specialist: Knows how to handle certain weapons better, can reload faster, keep weapons up to shape etc.
Driver: Has better control over vehicles, can fix some cars if theyre broken, can steal parked cars.
Builder: Can reinforce certain buildings, vehicles etc, can work together with technicians to 'capture' and reinforce buildings so zombies cant get in and players can set up a base/home.
Would be sweet if it was kept open and realistic from the start ie: You want some sweet clothes? get a group together and try to reach the deluxe fashion departement at some shopping mall. Want that a badass machine gun? Visit a soldier-zombie infested military base! Sure you can use a rocket launcher in the first minute you play the game, but where the F could you find one?
The levelling system would be similar to dead risings, only slightly slower(level up= more health/stamina/max.weight/resistance/etc).
Ugh... Im getting carried away, maybe I should write a GDD haha :P

Just kidding... hopefully microsoft won't look at this. That would be bad. Well, if it happens... you heard it here first!
It was already in the works at Ensemble
I vote for Dungeon Keeper!
Doing your Evil God and Horny's dirty work would be awesome. With all the different creatures available as different classes to play.
a real Mech mmo would be sweet too, where you have to build it like via Armored Core but then control and battle it in squads maybe something like Steel Battillion
i'm surprised how many people voted for Moorcock's books... its definitely not the most popular fantasy franchise ... hell most of those books are out of print now.
Although with the Elric movie coming out who knows, it might get revived.
to follow on from Warhammer, how about Dark Future? Has all the best bits from traditional post-apocalyptic roady games, but with the option for hardcore technology if you can afford it
I wouldda said the Wheel of Time MMO, but EA seemed to have picked up that tab.
Pokemon would be insanely cool (Diamond/Pearl) has the gameplay depth of a Final Fantasy.
An Armoured Core MMO would have been good if they didn't milk that franchise to crap.
And I'd love to see Infinity Ward take a stab at World War 2 Online.
World of Starcraft (seeing as almost everyone I know loved SC way more than WC).
And..... EA sports game franchise like Hockey or Football.
You get 1 player, to level up and train, and negotiate for money, but you have to play completely as a part of a multiplayer team. Standings... work your way up to the Pro Leagues, and then try and win the championship and MVP.
Also if you guys like those turn based Worms type games, you might love this FREE korean game called Gunbound I've been playing for years:
I don't really play MMO's except for my stint as an AC 1 beta tester, but ROBOTECH and Wing Commander (Privateer) might be fun. And by Privateer I don't mean EVE, I mean Privateer.

hahahah i was being sarcastic...
but a mech based mmo would be great mech commander is another squad based mech game that rocked
i'd make an mmo based on THE WIRE. SHIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
Haha... I would like this as well. But I think all the political issues with this might be a tough fight.
I suppose are are talking about season 1 or maybe the one with Marlo (4?)? Rest were not as good.
i don't see how a tv show can do things that a video game can't... the way i see it though is the wire MMO would be like a GTA mmo except you can play both sides, in which case it really wouldn't be the same kind of thing... hmmm i dunno i guess someone needs to really do alot of thinking to pull this off, but i don't think its impossible.
another idea is... High School mmo shit would sell like hotcakes.
I've never really gotten into MMO's, but I always really liked the idea, if developers would just try some different stuff. Here's a rough design I came up with for a sci-fi western MMO:

loool, a high school mmo would sell like crazy. But would it be a semi realistic type high school experience, or a totally crazy cartoony unrealistic type one.

Oh hell yes, how did I miss this?
I will get started on the character models now, who's doing environments?

Man, it'd be super if we could get some kind of warcraft MMO going here, youi know/.
mmo might be cool tho

Seconded.
Just give it a fresh coat of paint and some tweaks under the hood, and I'll play it again.
RIFTS.
Cyborg Dragons, GLitterboys, techno wizards, oh man... It would be WOW on crack.
AFTER THE BOMB
Mutant Animals battle in a post apocalyptic world. Think Fallout meets Furries!
or hell, just make that our theme for domwar 4.
bagsy Omar, THE coolest gay stickem-up artsit EVA

Missions are loosely based around having to run out and get stuff for the last human villiage.

I believe you may have missed out on the sarcasm in that recommendation, as the same person also suggested a Warcraft based mmo in that same post.
I would very much like to see a pokemon mmo. or at the very least a full 3d pokemon that plays just like diamond/pearl. none of that xd junk.
But, yeah, also something non-fantasy would be cool to see done well.
Rune= awesome AoC = arse
It pratically makes itself
