i know there's a thread for awesome stuff, but i thought this was special. it's not often that there's a level of abstraction like this in games. fantastic.
Yeah, it was quite funny (and fairly cute too), but personally I didn't find the funny/cute/interesting factor really outweighed the mainly pointless game itself.
I don't know about you guys but I'm having a hell of a time with this game.
I just finished getting through the tunnel but I can't seem to kill the boss. I've tried everything...and the walk-through didn't help at all.
I feel like people are trying too hard to make that thing awesome?
Like when kids pick up a joke and throw it out over and over again :P
So yeah the guy behind this is making fun of both mainstream games (lack of original gameplay) and indie games (obscure pixel art + funny end credit folk song = greatest thing ever).
Even if it's funny and well made but I agree with Mop. Pass!
maybe I'm cranky and have no sense of humor, but I thought that was incredibly boring and not entertaining or funny. The art was kind of cute though. But yeah... I dont 'get' it.
I thought it was pretty ridiculous... the music was cool but an IGF finalist, seriously? I like this disgruntled IGF submitters version of it much more:
maybe I'm cranky and have no sense of humor, but I thought that was incredibly boring and not entertaining or funny. The art was kind of cute though. But yeah... I dont 'get' it.
Although it's "cute" I don't really see it as anything more than some stupid joke like "the cake is a lie." Though, I too, am cranky and have no sense of humor...Slum, let's go stomp some kittens.
The instructions as you move were a nice touch, but otherwise this is pointless. I suppose I'd be angry, but I only wasted about 1 minute of my life, so I can't complain.
kovac, now that was funny
edit: btw, here's my contender for greatest game ever made, gravitybone. i defy you not to chuckle. (15-20 mins long or so) http://www.blendogames.com/
this is just the way i look at it... but i'll try and explain why i think it's so great
First of all, as far as the sense of humor goes, i think it's very tactful. laughing at something is one thing, but taking that stupid thing, putting it on your head, taking it in and pretending that it's you, and running about with it is a little bit more complex if you ask me. there's a "seriousness" there that is, in my opinion, a FANTATIC tool for deconstructing stupidity. i mean.. you can't really deconstruct something as stupid unless you really identify with it, can you? otherwise you're just talking shit about something and you have no idea what you're talking about, because you aren't willing to GO THERE.
in order to believe that something is stupid, you have to first see things from it's perspective in it's entirety. such a person must have the ability to both do that AND process on an abstract level to understand what's going on. this game communicates THAT level of awareness
that's abstract.. meta.. what ever you want to call it on a level that, *please correct me here* hasn't been done before. not that i've seen.
Errr... After reading all the posts, I was actually expecting something rad. I spent more time listening to the crappy song at the end that I did anything else.
Thumbs down from me.
well it's true, you can't really ever get outside your perspective, but you can do a whole lot to identify with the way someone else sees the world.
lets say that i say "i hate black people"
lets say you go ahead and become that.. you say to yourself "i hate black people" (by the way, my father is black, this is for example)
when you become that thing, notice how you feel, and other ways that you think. imagine what PREDICATES that statement. then, take those concepts and mirror them against the original racist person and see what kind of response you get.
you might say "yeah, whites are the best! it's me and my group, all the way. whites rules"
If you get a strong affirmative, you'd know that your emotional read was correct. the man was indeed, ethnocentric. like george w.
basically it's a really good strategy for understanding something. the desire to understand stupidity is based on a realization that you're not fundamentally separate from it. in this day and age, many of us can appreciate that we're all deeply, fundamentally the same, and there needs to be some sort of loving harmony, but it's not often that anyone knows how to put this shit into practice. this is one way to put it into practice.
Hey this isnt Tribes 2... you lied. From what I have seen this isn't a game as there is almost no decision making involved but rather a puzzle that you are given the answer to, taking all the reward out of figuring out the puzzle. The humor was cute but not funny to me. It seemed the puzzle was built around the song because it is so short, making it seemed forced and unnatural. I tend not to find things funny when it seems artificial. That's one reason I don't find most stand up comics funny, because I think they are trying too hard. I think humor should be more spontaneous and surprising. Something involving interaction and improvisation.
And I agree with Earthquake, it is pretty annoying how so many people like to sensationalize the topic of their thread to get more attention.
Wtf, john warner, you've taken an incredibly straightforward joke and made a mess of trying to make it sound deep.
Geeze, guys. If i explain this it isn't going to be funny at all, but here goes: you have to burn the rope.
Seriously, there's no deep meaning, that's the entire joke. It was created for the purpose of making a meme out of it. The joke is straightforward and stupid -- the game hands you everything upfront. It's an extension of the brand of recurring joke that isn't actually that funny, but gets hilarious from its absurdity once you'v been going long enough.
basically, you have to burn the rope. That's all there really is to say, and that's all there really is to the joke. If it doesn't take on a ridiculous kind of humor after a while you're never going to find it funny.
Anyway Gravity bone is the same idea, really, as is Karoshi 2 -- take the player's expectations of what a game should be and play on them for some kind of an emotional response.
It seems to me like it's "trying too hard, by not trying at all".
One of the issues is that the people over at IGF found this to be "innovative" enough to push it through the contest, which I find insulting on some level; If I had a game in the contest, I would be upset by that.

I actually found it fairly annoying. The music was good though.
Refer to the walkthrough which John Walker or Rock Paper Shotgun kindly took the time to complete.

I didn't realize a 15 second (max) game could be boring lol
but ouch, making the IGF finals? I guess that's kinda silly
Well, Slum... You have to burn the rope.
Does that clear it up a bit?

Whare exactly do you get that from? I swear that when I see someone or something stupid, that's totally from my perspective. In it's entirety.
"He's stupid, I'm right" kind of thing.
Kids these days. They read to much.

amen!!
gravitybone is the best game i have ever played
Seriously, I loved gravitybone, I just wish there was more to the game! Grotto King was pretty enjoyable too. everyone, go here: BLENDO Games
I played burn the rope a while back and thought it was funny but people really seem to be hyping the game up way more than it deserves.
And I agree with Earthquake, it is pretty annoying how so many people like to sensationalize the topic of their thread to get more attention.
this makes me sad...

This is remake for the pc but 99% true to original. Simply brilliant back in the day

I didn't even chuckle.
The only funny thing I find is that it was trying to be funny/not funny at the same time and failed. Hard.
