There's a huge black metal scene in Australia as well. I can't remember the band names off the top of my head, but they're worth checking out. They're more a fusion of black and thrash meta, though.

Personally, I can't stand listening to 99% of Black metal and at least 50% of Death metal. I can appreciate it for what it is, but nearly all Black metal bands focus more on being technical and unique rather than making it actually enjoyable to listen to. Plus the lyrics are kind of angsty.
And it's not because I don't like heavy music because some of the hardcore I listen to is heavier than nearly every Black/Death metal band out there. I just feel there's a balance between speed/heaviness and making something enjoyable to listen to and they miss that mark heavily.
People people. What about some nice old folk metal. Finnish band, Sings in swedish (because it sounds more trollish of course). I bring to you. Finntroll.
I do love TOOL. I'm fairly new to Metal, I've certainly been getting more and more into it. But, Tool is barely "Metal", imo. Progressive metal... maybe but what I mean is that it isn't what I'd consider what I think this thread is calling for, which is something a little more stereotypically Metal, that heavier, angrier sound: "Real F'n Metal"
