and why?
basically, post an example of who you believe is the best band in the world, and your reasons why.

while i love metal, house, trance, and classical music. i would have to say that Queen, are the best band in the world. my reason for this, is that not only are they british (lol), but i can't think of any other band who have influenced not only music, but entire generations of people, and are still doing so.
whenever you sing "we are the champions", they wrote that. the same for "another one bites the dust".
there is no other band on earth that has written such iconic, epic, and generally anthemous songs.

lol @ miles .
Something I learned today.
*for those that need more*
They influenced a crap-ton of bands
They have a 27 number one songs
They were the only ones to start knocking Elvis off his throne
Until them, I don't know of anyone who successfully mixed so many different instruments into their music
Their music is still enjoyed by multiple generations
I can, however, list a few favorites I have at this time. normally is a long list but I'll be conservative:
Agalloch
Dream Theater
Opeth
He is Legend
Oceansize
Ayreon
Blind Guardian
Cursive
Murder By Death
Between The Buried & Me's 'Colors'
KISS pwnt the beatles.

I will say the beatles, as a band is pretty high up there. And Gav makes a strong case with Led Zepplin.
* I can't figure out how to imbed the video, so here is the link.
David Bowie, Danny Lohner, Maynard James Keenan, Milla Jovovich, Josh Freese and John Frusciante all on one track.
Stuff like "Until them, I don't know of anyone who successfully mixed so many different instruments into their music"... Mozart or the London Philharmonic may have something to say about that.
Speaking of which, if you guys are claiming best based on influence and sustained listening where's do Mozart, Tchakovski, etc... fit in?
Meh, whatever.
Currently though my favourite band is Daft Punk. Can't stop listening to alive 2007.

if it grinds or is heavy chances are it has been influenced by napalm death
amazed nobody has mentioned them yet. amazingly tight. amazing drummer, great messages and lyrics, and one of the best guitarists ever.

- Favorite band of the moment: Dropkick Murphys
- Longest running favorite band of the moment: Metalica (until they released black and then... well it started going down hill)
- The band I think has contributed the most to music: The Jimi Hendrix Experience
