Dude it looks awesome, I think it would help the piece if there was some break up and it wasn't only rock, perhaps some break up in colors with fire or some cloth somewhere. Maybe a hot chick waiting at the door. But just shapes, that way its legal . Looking cool.
I agree the rock is kind of making it all blend together, I plan on bringing in snow that will hopefully add some contrast and break up the different elements. I also plan on making some large generic plates of rock to lay over the patterns to break those up.
Thanks for all the comments! I feel like working on this is pretty random, I dont have a great overall plan I feel so Im goin back and forth from hating this to having a lot of fun with it.
Here's some grabs from the past few days, continuing to make some genric rock and meshing it in, and changing everything around.... :X cant wait to start adding snow i think it'll really help, that and sun rays and junk
Awesome, you need to make a whole map for some game with this theme, it's very otherwordly, kinda feels like what I'd imagine a proper sequel to the original quake would be like.
Very nice work so far, the depth illusion in the ice is really a very clever touch. The sky and atmosphere will make (or break) the piece for me, but the foundation is solid as a geigeresque rock.
textures are all 1024s, most pieces share a sheet so most are actually 1024x512. There's only about 4 or 5 unique textures right now.
Yeah the ice does become more opaque but its based on Dot(Normal,View) so it's not really dist from the camera but facing angle. It also is opaque when the Depth of the surface behind it is really close, then fades away. Then the translucent image is clear up close and Lerps to a blue color the further it's depth is from the ice plane, hopefully giving the illusion of cloudy ice/water.
As for the colors yeah it's gonna be pretty monotone because of it being rock and it's all going to look as though its been carved in the mountain. But the ice will add some blue hues and I'll use atmospheric scattering to bring in sun color.
wow this is lookin awesome. my only comment would be the highlights on the rocks hard edges are kinda looking like caustics reflected from water. would it be possible to see a screen grab of the ice shader setup, it sounds interesting. also, for the concept sketch stuff do you use a lot of custom brushes? really diggin the chunky style.
i just have to tell you, i looked at the pics before reading your description and thought to myself, "Hey, this looks how I imagined the island from Call of Cthulhu to look !"
Then I actually read the first post. Lo and behold !
that is looking seriously awesome man. Your concept improvement is working great. I luv that its so original. Please don't bring anything 'tech' into this!!!

Mind showing your material set up with you get the chance?
Also, how does one go about using atmospheric scattering? Sounds cool!
i guess its wip and you are working on it but as far as the ice goes i think that if it is that transparent/clear it would reflect more of the surrounding (IE. envmap it) and i also suggest making the rock material darker below the surface of the water. Maybe you can also hook up your shader with a largescale greymask and mask out areas thats less transparent so that the whole surface dont have the same opacity.
anyway, just some ideas. really like what you got going sofar, looks sweet.
yeah... I got distracted by a lot of other things and my honymoon is coming up, it doesn't look like it'll happen despite how enthusiastic i was at the beginning
Ok so im kidding, have fun! Shame about the entry, maybe you'll get time to finish it later even without the contest, would be nice to see the final version as this was one of my favs!

I think the randomness is what's making it so cool, so don't get discouraged! Keep it...
... up! (Pretend the nipples are highlighted)
I can't wait to see more!
What are you using to display this... Runs away as Mop come with an AXE.
started base layer of ice to go under snow, also more meshing
I can imagine how cool this will look once you get all the atmospheric elements in.
Only complaint - too much brown.
This is one of my fav. entry for the moment.
What else did you expect from an Epic monkey?
Great stuff tinman, for some reason this scream "next-gen MMO" to me
... Make of that what you will
looking GREAT!

Plan yo shit better, son. Can't believe you are not gonna finish.
*scowl*
It was pretty while it lasted. You better finish this down the line anyway.
